Anna Kendrick’s excellent directorial debut, Woman of the Hour, has ruled the Netflix top 10 list for a little while now, but it has just been unseated by something more akin to the vibe of Halloween, a new horror film called Don’t Move.

I’d never heard of it, it stars no one I’ve heard of, but it has instantly debuted at #1 on the service, indicating a strong level of interest in the new attempted murder-based 90 minute feature. The first thing I do when I see something like this pop up is check to see if it’s any good, and a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes is solid, though far outside the top 10 horror movies of the year list, certainly. An initial 51% audience score is not the best, though that’s only a few dozen reviews so far. Here’s the somewhat interesting premise of the film:

“When a killer injects her with a paralytic agent, a woman must run, fight and hide before her body completely shuts down.”

While not exactly the same thing, this reminds me a bit of the surprisingly good Megan Fox thriller Till Death, where she must escape being murdered while she is handcuffed to her dead husband and has to drag him around. That has a 90% critic score and 54% audience score. Sorry, audiences, you were wrong on that one.

Don’t Move is co-directed by Adam Schindler and Brian Netto, where this appears to be the highest-profile feature. It is, however, produced by horror legend Sam Raimi. Looking into the cast, I take it back, I do know its star Kelsey Asbille, who is Monica Dutton on Yellowstone, though I did not recognize her name. It also stars horror veteran Finn Wittrock who appeared in 31 episodes of American Horror Story, along with Ratched.

Honestly a 72% is probably enough to get me to watch it, as it sounds like a good concept at least. I also still need to watch Woman of the Hour. The rest of the list is mostly usual kids movie fare like Kung Fu Panda 4, Sing, Pets and Pixels. Super Mario Bros. is off the list! That has almost never happened!

We will see if Don’t Move attracts enough of an audience to stay on top for a bit, but given the spooky season it may be the vibe that people are looking for. I miss when Netflix was doing a bunch of Fear Street movies around this time, we need more of those.
