Well, that didn’t last too long. Despite arriving just four days ago, season 2 of XO Kitty has already been unseated in Netflix’s Top 10 list by the show it originally dethroned. That would be American Primeval, the brutal miniseries that has performed extremely well on Netflix since it was released all the way back on January 9, making it the top-performing new Netflix series of 2025 (I’m not yet sure how it performs against the last couple weeks of Squid Game season 2, but we should know soon).
I would not stress about XO Kitty returning for season 3. It debuted at #1 and is a relatively cheap show to make, something Netflix always likes to see. Netflix also really loves its “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” cinematic universe which now has three films and two seasons of this show. The last To All the Boys movie is supposed to be “final” installment, but who knows how many other series or films it might spawn. I didn’t actually know this, but XO Kitty is the first TV series to be spun out of an original Netflix movie, rather than just more sequels. So yes, I think Netflix will let it live for a while.
As for American Primeval, while it is in fact a miniseries, its creator has been pretty vocal about wanting to do a prequel based on its lead, Taylor Kitsch’s Isaac. Here’s what Peter Berg said about it.
“We’re talking about it right now. Good pick (of an Isaac prequel). That’s the way we’d go if we do it, and I don’t know if we will, but that would be the way we would go.”
He goes on to dismiss that they would do anything other than a prequel, and given how the original American Primeval has performed, I would not be surprised if the prequel was greenlit in short order. This is a surprisingly high viewership series for them.
The rest of the list has Squid Game planted at #3, and I do not believe it has fallen out of the top 5 since its Christmas release as it attempts to catch season 1 and become the most viewed season of a Netflix original series in history. We’ll get a numbers update soon. The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live is still performing well at #5, and I believe it’s the best performing Walking Dead show we’ve ever seen on Netflix. My wife’s favorite show, Younger, is also doing well, now at #6, and there are seven full seasons to watch. It is good actually!
So, we’ll see how long American Primeval can stay on top here this time, but new shows are coming, so it may not have that long. We’ll look for spin-off announcements and then season 3 for XO Kitty soon here, I imagine.
