Zack Snyder is coming off the unequivocal failure of four copies of two entries of Rebel Moon, his sprawling live-action sci-fi epic that was roasted by critics and not exactly embraced by even most of his loyal fans. But now? His next Netflix project is going much better.

That would be the animated series Twilight of the Gods, which is based on Norse mythology. Snyder is a creator, executive producer and director of the premiere and finale episodes, and yes, it’s certainly being more well-received than Rebel Moon ever was.

Twilight of the Gods has a 60% score on Rotten Tomatoes from critics, not amazing given how high quality of lot of Netflix animation is, and a far cry from the perfect 100% score of a similar series like Blood of Zeus. But it boasts an 80% audience score, which is in fact quite good, and the point is, this is all much, much better than Rebel Moon’s reviews, where the first and second films got 22% and 16% scores respectively, his lowest ever.

Twilight of the Gods debuted in the lower half of the Top 10 list and is no doubt angling for a second season. It’s unclear what sort of numbers the animated series may need to produce to get that.

As for Snyder himself, news has broken that he may be leaving Netflix to work on a 300 show for Warner Bros. Television. It would be a prequel to his 2006 movie where well, everyone died. There was indeed another 300 film, 300: Rise of an Empire, though Snyder was a co-writer on it and did not serve as director there. 300 remains one of his better films, and I would be interested to see what he would do with a series. Would Gerard Butler’s Leonidas return, if it’s a prequel?

Despite all the Snyder Cut drama from the DCEU days, it has been something of a relief to see him move on from that universe and get back to doing different stuff again. No, I did not like Rebel Moon, but I will not ignore that I have liked the vast majority of his other projects, and I’d love to see him get back to making cool stuff again. Twilight of the Gods is a start, at least, and I’m definitely going to check it out.
