Data has never been more powerful—and the brands that use it well have a real edge. But even the best forecasting tools can only tell you what has already happened. The brands pulling ahead are leaning into something beyond data: co-creation. A genuine co-creation strategy gives organizations a way to get ahead of the data, so they can build alongside customers in real time rather than waiting for the numbers to catch up to the cultural moment.

Why Focus Groups Aren’t Enough

The old model was straightforward: bring customers in, ask them questions, sort them into neat profiles, take those findings back to the team, and build around them. We approached consumer insights as information to be gathered rather than relationships to be built. We would collect the feedback, analyze it, and then decide what to do with it, all while still ultimately controlling the conversation. That’s not real co-creation.

Social listening was a step forward, but it only went so far because it largely stayed surface-level. What’s actually needed are feedback circles running through every single aspect of the organization—product, marketing, customer experience, and partnerships. A genuine co-creation strategy doesn’t try to dictate from the inside out; it builds its audience into the system at every level, transforming the consumer from customer into collaborator.

How a Co-Creation Strategy Helps Brands Keep Up

The brands getting this right are not treating co-creation as a campaign or a one-off initiative. They’re treating it as an operating system, crafting a distributed network where customers, creators, and community members are all contributing to make the whole system stronger.

Allison Ellsworth built Poppi into a brand compelling enough to be acquired by PepsiCo by genuinely centering customer feedback at every stage of development. The community that consumed the product helped shape it. LEGO has built something similar through LEGO Ideas, a platform where fans submit and vote on new set designs, with the most popular ideas actually going into production. The brand didn’t just listen to its community—it built infrastructure that let the community co-create the product line itself.

The cautionary counterexample is any brand still deciding internally what the customer should want and then trying to convince them of it—an approach that can lead to, at best, little impact or, at worst, costly missteps followed by even pricier pivots.

Forecasting still matters, but data tells you what already happened. A genuine co-creation strategy gives you an early signal on what’s coming, sourced directly from the people closest to it.

What It Takes to Co-Create

Operating at the speed of culture is difficult—it requires going beyond predicting and even beyond listening, to co-creating. Instead of seeing the consumer as the end target for the product or service, see them as the partner in crafting it.

The technology to support forecasting has never been better. AI tools can sharpen your analytics, optimize your data, and help you understand what’s happening in your business in real time. But the philosophy we’ve found most powerful mirrors what we’ve learned about co-creation strategy: when you pair that analytical capability with genuine community intelligence, the whole system gets stronger. AI helps you understand what’s happening. Your community helps you understand what it means—and where things are heading. The brands that will define the next era are the ones running both together. The consumer was always meant to be at the center of strategy. Now, we have the tools to actually make that possible.
