Phillies Bust, Former 1-1 Pick, Assigns Blame Amid Stunning Resurgence

The Philadelphia Phillies have built one of baseball’s most expensive rosters, but their recent success has also highlighted a longstanding question: Where are the impact position players developed from within the organization?

That question has become increasingly difficult to ignore as former Phillies prospects have found success elsewhere. And few examples are more striking than Mickey Moniak, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, who was once viewed as one of the biggest disappointments in all of Philadelphia sports.

But now, as Moniak enjoys a stunning resurgence with the Colorado Rockies, the former Phillies outfielder has offered some insight into why things never clicked during his time in Philadelphia.

Former Philadelphia Phillies 1-1 Pick Explains What Went Wrong

Moniak was only 23 when he was labeled a bust, despite entering professional baseball with enormous expectations. The Phillies selected him first overall in 2016, the so-called “1-1” pick, and envisioned him eventually joining Bryce Harper as a centerpiece of the organization’s next generation.

Instead, Moniak struggled to establish himself in Philadelphia and was eventually traded to the Los Angeles Angels in 2022.

Looking back, Moniak blamed a lack of consistent playing time for the struggles.

“I didn’t really have the luxury, or I should say they didn’t have the luxury of giving me a leash to go out there and maybe get 100 at-bats to figure it out,” Moniak told USA Today’s Bob Nightengale. “The most at-bats I got in a stretch was maybe 20. It was just tough to find a rhythm. But I totally understand the nature of this game and the business side of it. They put a lot of money into that organization and (were) in a win-now mode.”

That explanation raised an uncomfortable question about whether the Phillies give their young hitters enough opportunity to develop before moving on, questions that persist as the team continues to fall short on expectations for their homegrown talent, particularly position players.

Philadelphia Phillies Castoff Sees Resurgence, Raises Bigger Questions

The Phillies have produced valuable young players, but their most significant homegrown contributions in recent years have come from the pitching side. Meanwhile, players such as Moniak, Scott Kingery and Aiden Miller have struggled to become consistent offensive contributors in Philadelphia.

Colorado clearly sees something Philadelphia ultimately could not unlock.

“Mickey’s an important part of what we’re doing here,” Rockies president of baseball operations Paul DePodesta said as the team announced an extension amid his resurgence, per MLB.com’s Thomas Harding. “He had a very good year last year. He’s been off to a great start this year. Unfortunately, he missed a little time with the (right ankle) injury, but he’s a legitimate, middle-of-the-order bat for us. He’s a leader in our clubhouse.”

That is a notable description for a player once viewed as a Phillies bust, who was sent packing by the organization.

Moniak’s resurgence does not prove Philadelphia failed him. But it does reinforce the organization’s larger developmental challenge: identifying how to turn highly drafted position players into impact major leaguers before they find their footing somewhere else.
