The New York Mets’ disappointing 2026 season forced the club into an unexpected direction at the trade deadline, with the front office dismantling much of its major league roster in favor of a prospect-heavy future.
The Mets entered the deadline struggling in the standings and ultimately traded several veteran players in an acknowledgement that they would miss the playoffs for a second straight season, despite an aggressive payroll.
“The Mets … traded nine players in the weeks leading up to the Aug. 3 deadline, including David Peterson, Freddy Peralta, Luke Weaver, Brooks Raley, Huascar Brazobán and Ben Rortvedt,” Peter Sblendorio reported for the New York Daily News. “Their overall return featured 13 minor-leaguers, including nine whom MLB Pipeline now ranks among their top 30 prospects, with High-A shortstop Sammy Stafura (No. 11), High-A outfielder Aidan Smith (No. 14) and Double-A second baseman Émilien Pitre (No. 17) among the others.”
Peralta was perhaps the most notable departure as he embodied the Mets disappointment more than any other player. Highly coveted going into his contract year, the Mets acquired him from the Milwaukee Brewers only to see him post his worst season to date.
But despite his frustrating stint with the Mets, the veteran right-hander doesn’t appear to be carrying hard feelings as he prepares to return to Queens with the Tampa Bay Rays.
New York Mets Trade Castoff Freddy Peralta Has Moved On
Peralta’s time in New York did not go according to plan. The Mets acquired him expecting a proven starting pitcher to strengthen their rotation, but his performance deteriorated badly enough that the club ultimately included him in its deadline sell-off.
Now, however, Peralta has found a fresh start with Tampa Bay.
“After an initial ugly start for his new team, Peralta — whom the Mets traded Aug. 3 for prospects Aidan Smith, Gary Gill Hill and Emilien Pitre — has brought value to the Rays,” Mike Puma reported for the New York Post. “Over his last four starts, he’s pitched to a 3.80 ERA, which included six scoreless innings against the Tigers in his last outing. He is Tuesday’s scheduled starter for the Rays…”
The turnaround has given Peralta an opportunity to put his Mets struggles behind him, even as he prepares to face his former club. More importantly, he doesn’t appear to view his departure as a personal rejection.
When asked about his relationships inside the Mets clubhouse, which have been pointed to as a potential cause for the disappointing season, Peralta emphasized the friendships he built during his time in New York.
“Most of the guys, we were really close,” he told Puma. “The American guys, too, we were very close and we created a good relationship.”

The Mets are now evaluating the young players they received as part of their organizational reset, while Peralta is trying to establish himself as a reliable piece of the Rays’ pitching staff ahead of a postseason push.
He will get his chance to show the Mets what they are missing Tuesday, when he is scheduled to start for Tampa Bay in Queens. Meanwhile, his old team will be left to evaluate the younger players who might be able to contribute to a bounceback campaign next year.
