Hunter Biden launches crypto meme coin making light of laptop scandal

Hunter Biden is turning his notorious laptop into a crypto play — launching a $LAPTOP meme coin that will hand out tokens to investors who lost money betting on President Trump’s digital currency.

The former first son plans to launch $LAPTOP on Wednesday using Coinbase’s blockchain network Base, the Wall Street Journal reported Monday, citing people familiar with the project.

The coin will have a total supply of 1 billion tokens.

Hunter Biden is turning his notorious laptop into a crypto venture with the launch of the $LAPTOP meme coin.

Biden and his fellow founders are slated to receive nearly a third of the 1 billion coins, according to the Journal. They will have to wait six months before selling any of their allotment, which will become fully available over two years.

Meanwhile, some of Trump’s crypto investors could get a piece of Biden’s new venture for free.

Biden is reportedly setting aside some 20% of the $LAPTOP coins for people who lost money on the president’s $TRUMP token.

Trump’s meme coin has been brutal for many investors who piled in after its launch. It recently traded around $2.27 — nearly 97% below its January 2025 record of $73.43.

Nearly 1 million retail traders lost an estimated $3.8 billion on the token, according to a July 2026 report by Democratic staff on the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, which cited blockchain analysis.

Photos and other material from Hunter Biden’s former laptop became a political sensation after The Post first reported on its contents in 2020.

Other analyses have put losses among losing traders at $3.2 billion to $4.5 billion.

The losses came even as Trump-linked entities stood to benefit from the token. CIC Digital, a Trump Organization affiliate, and Fight Fight Fight LLC together controlled 80% of the original 1 billion-token allocation, according to the coin’s official disclosures, while Trump-linked entities also receive trading revenue.

The new Hunter Biden coin comes with an unusual gimmick: As much as 30% of its supply could be permanently destroyed if a series of predetermined events come to pass — potentially making the remaining tokens scarcer.

Hunter Biden’s laptop contained personal photos as well as messages detailing his foreign business dealings.

In crypto parlance, the practice is known as “burning,” or permanently taking coins out of circulation, thus reducing the total supply available to investors. In theory, making a token scarcer can help support its price if demand holds up — although there’s no guarantee it will.

Among the events that could trigger a token burn are a Democrat winning the White House in 2028, bitcoin reaching a new record high and $LAPTOP eclipsing the fully diluted valuation of Trump’s meme coin.

If the specified outcomes don’t happen within allotted time frames, the corresponding coins will instead be donated to charity, according to the Journal.

The $LAPTOP project will give away some of its tokens to investors who lost money on President Trump’s $TRUMP meme coin.

Some of the meme coin is being set aside for Biden’s Substack subscribers and people on a mailing list curated by his friend, video journalist Andrew Callaghan, according to the Journal.

The remaining 20% of the tokens are reportedly earmarked for charity and liquidity needs, including distributions to exchanges and market makers, as well as a foundation set up to cover the project’s legal, accounting, administrative and compliance expenses.

Biden has recently emerged as an outspoken crypto booster, calling decentralized digital currencies the “inevitable future” in posts on X.

His entry into meme coins nevertheless carries considerable risk for buyers given the fact that such tokens have no intrinsic value and frequently plunge after an initial burst of speculative trading.

The crypto venture comes six years after material from Biden’s laptop burst into public view during the 2020 presidential campaign.

The computer became a political sensation in 2020 when its contents — including messages about Biden’s foreign business dealings and photos documenting his drug use — were first reported by The Post.

Hunter Biden’s laptop became a political flashpoint during his father Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign.

The bombshell reporting landed less than three weeks before the presidential election — and was quickly throttled by Big Tech.

Twitter blocked users from sharing links to The Post’s coverage and locked the newspaper out of its account for two weeks, while Facebook reduced distribution of the stories.

Days later, 51 former intelligence officials suggested the laptop story bore the hallmarks of a Russian information operation — despite acknowledging they had no evidence of Kremlin involvement.

Subsequent forensic examinations authenticated thousands of emails, and federal investigators later matched material on the laptop with data obtained independently from Biden’s iCloud account.

The Post has sought comment from Hunter Biden and the White House.
