Transforming SIs Into Indispensable Managed Service Providers

The physical security industry is undergoing a structural shift. As enterprise IT and physical security converge, systems integrators (SIs) and security implementation specialists face an urgent imperative: escape shrinking box margins, rising labor costs and project-to-project revenue volatility.

According to a 2024 McKinsey & Company report, legacy hardware-only business models risk up to 15% revenue erosion, while the global market for AI-driven managed services is projected to surpass $200 billion by 2029. Integrators who adapt their service delivery models stand to increase overall profitability by up to 30%. To capture this demand, integrators must evolve from transactional hardware installers into proactive managed service providers (MSPs).

The Partner-Centric Cloud Advantage

Integrators can leverage multitenant cloud platforms to eliminate on-premises server overhead and centralize multisite administration. This model transforms operations across three key dimensions:

1. Predictable, High-Margin RMR: Replaces one-off installation revenue with recurring monthly service subscriptions for specialized AI services, remote maintenance and monitoring, cloud storage and more.

2. Workforce Upskilling: Shifts field technicians from physical cable-and-mount installers into high-value cloud networking specialists, IoT administrators and visual AI architects.

3. Strategic Business Value: Moves beyond standard post-incident reviews to solve real-time operational challenges for C-suite and facility leaders, driving long-term customer retention and lifetime value (LTV).

Three Core Managed Cloud Services In Action

1. Proactive System And Camera Health Monitoring

Rather than waiting for a customer to discover a failed camera after a security incident occurs, the cloud platform continuously audits network heartbeat, bandwidth and storage integrity across all endpoints.

For instance, an edge storage card in a warehouse camera develops bad sectors at 2 a.m. and drops offline due to a local DHCP lease expiration. The platform instantly identifies the failure and alerts the integrator’s network operations center (NOC). The integrator resolves the issue before morning business hours, eliminating the common nightmare scenario of discovering an unrecorded break-in weeks after the fact.

2. Remote Triage And Remediation

Eliminating unbillable truck rolls directly protects operating margins. Level-1 and Level-2 technicians can diagnose, configure and resolve system issues securely from their desktop.

I’ve come across a field application where following a severe thunderstorm, the AI-guided video surveillance alerted the SI of an unresponsive loading dock camera. Instead of dispatching a service van ($150 to $300 in fuel and labor) and navigating traffic, the technician accessed the multitenant dashboard. Within four minutes, the technician inspected port wattage on the managed PoE switch, performed a remote power cycle, deployed a firmware patch and restored live video without ever leaving the office.

3. AI-Driven Video Verification And Operational Supervision

Deploying computer vision and visual AI agents at the edge within the cloud can filter out environmental noise (swaying trees, headlights, animals), eliminating more than 95% of false motion alerts.

One SI working with both an auto dealership as well as a construction site required after-hours perimeter protection. The SI used a visual AI agent that he set up to activate exclusively when an unauthorized human or vehicle would enter a restricted zone after 10 p.m.

When someone breached the zone, the AI supervisor (agent) delivered a verified 10-second video snippet to the integrator and facility manager. Also, because the threat was able to be confirmed in real time, the emergency dispatch queued the event as a priority crime in progress rather than a low-priority unverified alarm and saved the day.

Expanding Beyond Security: Vertical AI Intelligence

Integrators can tailor visual AI agents to solve specialized, vertical-specific operational challenges—unlocking higher-tier recurring revenue:

Reatil and quick-service restaurants can audit drive-thru bottlenecks, analyze foot traffic and flag point-of-sale (POS) anomalies. Fuel and transportation logistics can identify unauthorized or high-risk vehicles via automated license plate recognition (LPR) as well as monitor hazardous pump zones and automatically shut off at-risk pumps and require prepayment. Regulated facilities and medical labs can automatically audit PPE compliance and control authorized access into cleanroom environments.

Barriers To Adoption

If the financial and operational benefits of transitioning to an AI-driven MSP model are so compelling, why haven’t all organizations made the leap? In practice, both SIs and their customers encounter distinct friction points such as:

• CapEx Vs. OpEx Resistance: Clients accustomed to one-off hardware purchases push back on recurring subscription fees without immediate proof of ROI.

• Privacy And Data Security: Security and IT teams frequently worry about relinquishing direct control of video archives, including concerns around bandwidth consumption, cloud storage security and compliance.

• Vendor Lock-In Fears: They resist proprietary ecosystems that force them to replace functional cameras or marry their entire infrastructure to a single hardware manufacturer.

To accelerate adoption, providers must ensure their platforms support open, hybrid ecosystems by enabling plug-and-play gateways that connect existing cameras to the cloud, avoiding full hardware replacements. They must also guarantee strict data governance by implementing local edge storage with encrypted cloud access and granular permission controls to resolve security concerns.

Providers can also empower the channel and provide turnkey multitenant management dashboards, automated remote diagnostics and ready-to-sell service packages to shorten the learning curve for SI teams.

Important Guidance When Scaling Services

Transitioning to an AI-driven MSP model doesn’t require an operational overhaul. Integrators can prove value and secure subscriptions through a simple 30-day proof of concept:

1. Targeting High-Friction Accounts: Select two or three existing clients facing frequent false alarms or high compliance overhead.

2. Deploying Hybrid-Cloud Gateways: Connect cloud AI to existing cameras using edge gateways to avoid upfront hardware replacement costs.

3. Monetizing The Measured ROI: Present hard data on false alarms eliminated and truck rolls avoided to seamlessly convert clients to a monthly recurring contract.

Future Outlook

The next 12 to 18 months are critical. According to the Security Industry Association’s 2025 Security Megatrends Report (via Wesco), 70% of businesses favored outcome-driven cloud and AI services over traditional hardware.

Integrators who fail to capture this recurring subscription layer may risk losing clients to IT-native MSPs. Adopting cloud-native delivery, automated remote support and visual AI insights can allow integrators to protect their margins from commoditization and solidify their role as essential technology advisors.
