Popular travel stop opens new store near California border

Popular travel stop Buc-ee’s has opened its closest location to California yet, giving West-Coasters their first taste of the fast-growing convenience store.

Buc-ee’s has locations across most of the southern US, but chain has recently expanded west to Goodyear, Arizona with a massive new travel center.

Opened in June, the new location at Interstate 10 and Bullard Avenue spans a whopping 74,000 square feet, has 120 fueling pumps and is open 24 hours a day, seven days week.

The travel center is just a 2 hour drive from the California- Arizona border city of Blythe, California, and a 5 hour drive from Los Angeles.

“We could not have picked a better location for our first store in the Grand Canyon state,” Buc-ee’s Real Estate Director Stan Beard said in a June statement.

“Perfectly placed for our road-trippers headed out to California or coming in for the destination-rich Phoenix area, Goodyear will be the place to stop.”

The company said the new store will bring over 200 new jobs to the Phoenix suburb.

The Texas-based convenience superstore is known for its Buc-ee’s branded food items, including their signature “Beaver nuggets”, beef jerky, homemade fudge, popcorn fresh pastries and Texas-style barbecue.

Buc-ees has a total of 56 locations across Texas, Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee. Earlier this month, the company announced that they will open six new locations in 2027.

The chain is planning to open in new states as well, with a Louisiana location set to open next year, and a Utah location tentatively slated for 2028.

At the opening of the chain’s first location in Arkansas in August, Buc-ee’s CEO Arch Aplin III suggested that the chain prefers to build locations in conservative states.

“I’m starting to realize life’s too short to try to build in places that people don’t appreciate what you’re bringing, versus a place like this where people do appreciate what you’re building,” Aplin said.

“That leadership, that concept, that idea of conservative, business-friendly, family-oriented concept, works so much better if it trickles down from the very leadership from the top.”
