Mike Bloomberg is giving $80M to Democrats in closely watched midterms: report

Former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is reportedly giving $80 million to Democrats — swooping in with a last-minute attempt to help lefty candidates in next month’s closely watched midterms.

The billionaire businessman and onetime presidential candidate is on track to spend about $80 million since September to help Dems, the New York Times reported Tuesday. Some of the giving is still underway, the report said.

None of the donations will go toward democratic socialist candidates, as Bloomberg, 84, is increasingly concerned about the party’s shift toward the left — especially when it comes to its stance on Israel, Howard Wolfson, Bloomberg’s political adviser, told the Times.

“He is a pragmatist. He is a centrist,” Wolfson said of Bloomberg. “I would be surprised if in the end he didn’t support someone who shared that orientation and was from that wing of the party.”

Bloomberg is yet to actually decide his 2028 choice, according to the adviser.

One of his donations is going toward Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, a Democrat who has been rumored as a potential 2028 contender.

The spate of last-minute contributions make Bloomberg one of the largest Democratic donors in this year’s midterms, while Elon Musk – the world’s richest person, with a near trillion-dollar net worth – spends hundreds of millions on Republicans.

Bloomberg “is of the view that resources matter in campaigns,” Wolfson said, adding that the business mogul “expects a result” – even though he spent a whopping $1 billion sum on his own unsuccessful presidential campaign in 2020.

He is focused on securing a notable Democratic majority in the House of Representatives, enough to elevate New York Rep. Hakeem Jeffries – currently the minority leader – to House speaker.

The total he is planning to spend this fall is similar to what he spent during the 2018 campaign season, when Democrats ultimately flipped the House.

At least $50 million of his donations are going toward House races, including $24 million to Everytown for Gun Safety, a group he co-founded, and $16 million to House Majority PAC, which is linked to Jeffries, the Times reported.

Much of his contributions are also aimed at helping Democratic candidates keep pace with Republican rivals’ advertising and TV blitz.

Bloomberg is planning to spend an additional $10 million on competitive House races, according to the report.

Bloomberg reps did not immediately respond to The Post’s request for comment.
