Famous 102-year-old LA diner springs back to life after closing — revealing new opening date

The griddles are firing back up at the diner that never closed.

Downtown Los Angeles’ century-old Original Pantry Cafe, which served hungry Angelenos of all stripes around the clock and every day of the year before abruptly shutting down in early 2025, is officially rising from the ashes.

The historic 24/7 gem at 9th and Figueroa is making a miraculous comeback, complete with giant pancakes and longtime employees — along with a new mission to help the homeless, according to real estate mogul Leo Pustilnikov, who now holds the keys to a property that famously never needed them.

The 102-year-old downtown institution is set to turn the lights on again on Nov. 19, ending a nearly 20-month closure that left generations of loyal customers heartbroken.

The 102-year-old downtown institution is set to turn the lights on again on Nov. 19, ending a nearly 20-month closure that left generations of loyal customers heartbroken.

The surprise revival offers a rare helping of good news for LA’s battered restaurant scene, where beloved neighborhood institutions have been dropping like flies amid soaring operational costs and dwindling business. Just this month, the city lost 15-year-old La Brea breakfast favorite Sycamore Kitchen, while Fashion District destination Sora Craft Kitchen also called it quits despite earning significant national acclaim.

Every meal served at the rebirthed Pantry will help fund a well-known nonprofit that works with the city’s overwhelming homeless population. The move transforms the vintage greasy spoon into a social enterprise that will not only support outreach efforts — but also provide job training and opportunities for people trying to get back on their feet, Pustilnikov promised.

“When you pay for your meal here, you’re also paying it forward,” the Pantry’s website reads. “Somebody else’s meal, somewhere down the line. Every meal served here helps fund Hope the Mission’s work with the 75,000 Angelenos experiencing homelessness on any given night, providing food, shelter, care, and a path forward.”

The Pantry’s second act comes with an unusual twist: Every meal served will help fund services for the city’s overwhelming homeless population.
Former Mayor Richard Riordan raises his arms outside of his downtown restaurant The Original Pantry Cafe.

Better yet for regulars who missed the familiar faces behind the counter, Pustilnikov said he was able to hammer out a deal with union Unite Here Local 11 to welcome back many of the diner’s veteran staff — good news after a bitter labor spat said to have helped along the 2025 closure.

“I feel like The Pantry is sort of the story of LA,” Pustilnikov said last year. “It’s had its ups and downs and, hopefully, much like LA and much like downtown, the reopening will boost the rebirth of downtown.”

For decades, the no-frills joint operated 24 hours a day, seven days a week, serving everyone from night owls and downtown workers to tourists and politicians.

Following the 2023 death of its previous owner, former Los Angeles Mayor Richard Riordan, the family trust put the property on the chopping block.

The surprising revival comes as another DTLA dining legend, Cole’s French Dip, also prepares to make its own triumphant return under new ownership and with a revamped menu — a double portion of positivity for the perennially struggling area, recently ranked as one of the worst, least-attractive downtowns in the world.

The historic haunt, which claims to have invented the French dip sandwich, which served its last meal in March after 118 years in business, is poised to possibly reopen as soon as November.
