In an era of accelerating digital transformation, procurement continues to evolve at a rapid pace. A key driver of this change is generative AI (GenAI), a technology with the potential to revolutionize how businesses source, manage and pay for goods and services. In this interview, Aatish Dedhia, Founder & CEO of Zycus, a leading provider of GenAI-powered Source-to-Pay (S2P) solutions, sits down with Hervé Le Faou, CPO & Sustainability Leader at Heineken, to discuss the future of procurement and the exciting possibilities of GenAI.

Aatish: Hervé, thank you for joining me today. Heineken has been a valued Zycus customer for over six years, and we’re excited to explore your vision for procurement’s future. GenAI is a hot topic across industries. How do you see it impacting procurement?

Hervé: Thank you, Aatish. At Heineken, innovation is core to our DNA. We believe GenAI has the potential to significantly transform procurement, particularly in enhancing user experience and driving sustainability initiatives. Imagine a future where AI can understand a buyer’s needs through natural language conversations, streamlining processes and freeing up valuable time for strategic tasks. Additionally, GenAI can analyze vast amounts of data to identify sustainable sourcing opportunities and potential risks within our complex supply chain.

Aatish: That’s a fascinating perspective. Zycus’ GenAI-powered platform can indeed facilitate natural language interactions, making procurement more user-friendly and accessible. Beyond user experience through intake management, GenAI can power intelligent automation tools that can handle repetitive tasks, evolving the role of procurement professionals toward more strategic activities.

Hervé: Absolutely. At Heineken, managing a spend of over €17 billion (US$18.3 billion) across 80 markets necessitates a highly efficient procurement team. GenAI-powered automation can free up our team’s bandwidth to focus on areas such as supplier innovation and risk mitigation strategies. This shift is crucial for Heineken as it aligns with our broader objectives of agility, resilience and sustainability within our supply chain.

Aatish: Speaking of sustainability and ESG goals, how can procurement play a bigger role in achieving those goals?

Hervé: A significant portion of Heineken’s environmental impact stems from our supply chain. By leveraging GenAI for supplier selection and lifecycle management, we can prioritize suppliers who share our commitment to sustainability. GenAI can also analyze and classify our emissions data accurately and help in identifying suppliers with strong environmental practices and assess their impact on our overall carbon footprint.

Aatish: That’s a powerful application of GenAI. Zycus is committed to developing solutions that empower businesses like Heineken to achieve their sustainability targets. While Heineken is still evaluating GenAI solutions, your forward-thinking approach positions you well to harness the full potential of this technology.

Hervé: We are impressed with the innovative capabilities Zycus brings to the table. The proven value Zycus’ S2P suite has delivered for Heineken over the past six years is a testament to your strong technology and partnership approach. We look forward to staying at the forefront of procurement innovation alongside Zycus, including exploring GenAI’s potential to unlock new levels of efficiency and sustainability within our organization.

Aatish: As we look toward the future, what are your thoughts on the challenges and opportunities GenAI presents?

Hervé: The journey toward integrating GenAI into procurement is filled with both challenges and opportunities. One of the key challenges is ensuring a smooth transition and adoption across our teams. However, the opportunities far outweigh these challenges. GenAI can significantly enhance decision-making, improve efficiency and foster innovation. It’s about embracing these technologies to not only transform procurement but also drive broader organizational goals. At Heineken, we’re excited about the possibilities GenAI offers and are committed to exploring its potential to redefine procurement.

Aatish: The collaboration between Zycus and Heineken exemplifies the power of technology and strategic partnerships in transforming procurement. Your commitment to sustainability is truly inspiring, and we’re confident that GenAI will play a key role in your journey toward net zero emissions.

Heineken’s journey with Zycus highlights the role of GenAI in transforming procurement processes to enhance efficiency, effectiveness, and achieve ESG and sustainability goals. As Heineken embarks on its next chapter of sustainable procurement excellence, Zycus is proud to be its partner in innovation.
