Apple iOS 26.6.1 New iPhone Software: Should You Upgrade?

The latest iPhone update has arrived and it is all about security fixes. It’s an interesting release as the fixes have been released in the iOS 27 developer and public betas, so their appearance in iOS 26 now is an indication that they’re urgently needed.

This post has the initial thoughts on the new release and I’ll be updating this post over the coming week and I’ll add final thoughts on Tuesday, August 25.

Who Is It For And How Do You Get It?

Like most releases in this current iPhone cycle, this update is for every iPhone running iOS 26, that is, all phones from the iPhone 11 onwards. To upgrade to the new software, simply open the Settings app on the iPhone, choose General, then Software Update. Next, tap on Download and Install, and the software will download from there. This download is small, less than 800MB on my iPhone 17 Pro Max but if you’re updating from an earlier iOS 26 version, your download will be bigger and take longer to install.

What It’s About

There are no new features in this update but a lot of security fixes and bug squishes.

Apple iOS 26.6.1 Security

There are 29 fixes in total, all of them taken from the iOS 27 developer and public betas, but put on general release now because Apple has recognized that AI-driven security concerns mean that the earlier security fixes can be released, the better.

Most of the updates here are related to WebKit, the heart of Apple’s Safari browser, though there are threats to the Kernel as well.

Initial Reactions

Some initial thoughts were highly enthusiastic, while others suggested that as iOS 27 is so near, that maybe it’s worth waiting for that. There have been a lot of comments about the last release, iOS 26.6, and how stable it was, and how good at boosting battery life, so you can see why some users were reluctant to leave that behind. Even so, there have been enough positive responses to suggest that few, if any, new problems have been introduced with the new software.

Apple iOS 26.6.1 Initial Verdict: Update

With more than two dozen security fixes on board, and so few issues raised in the first day or so after release, this is an easy one to recommend: it’s worth updating now. I’ll update this post with the final verdict on Tuesday, Aug. 25.
