The latest iPhone update has arrived and it is low on features and high on fixes. Uniquely, it’s here to prepare users for the next-generation iPhone cycle, iOS 27, as well as address current issues. Here are details of what’s in it, first reactions and whether you should update to it.

This post has the initial thoughts on the new release and I’ll be updating it over the coming week. I’ll add final thoughts on Tuesday, August 4.

Who Is It For And How Do You Get It?

This update is for every iPhone running iOS 26, that is, all phones from the iPhone 11 onwards. To upgrade to the new software, simply open the Settings app on the iPhone, choose General, then Software Update. Next, tap on Download and Install, and the software will download from there. This download is large, 17.78GB on my iPhone 17 Pro Max but if you’re updating from an earlier iOS 26 version such as iOS 26.5.1, your download could be bigger and take longer to install.

What It’s About

There are few new features in this release, with bug fixes and security updates the main fare.

New elements include a notification if you’ve blocked the maximum number of contacts and something to prepare your iPhone for software coming later. Specifically, iOS 26.6 “optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27,” as Apple described it. If you’re wondering why this is coming now, it’s because some early adopters of iOS 27 betas found that indexing was taking a very long time, several weeks for some, so this optimization could save time later. Oh, and since every iPhone capable of running iOS 26 can also handle iOS 27, it’s good to get this change in now.

Apple iOS 26.6 Security

Depending on how you add them up, there are between 75 and almost 90 security fixes and patches in this update. They range across many parts of the iPhone experience, from the Apple Neural Engine to the Books app and more. There are three issues with Contacts, six with ImageIO, and 14 problems affecting the Kernel, the heart of the software which manages hardware resources, for instance.

Initial Reactions

A mixed bag of reports so far. As usual, concerns of battery life declining, though the first days often show an issue which usually resolves itself. However, there are others saying the battery has improved. Additionally, some have said that their iPhone has been getting hot recently and this update seems to have sorted that. Some other issues, such as camera problems, have not got worse, but haven’t gone away.

Apple iOS 26.6 Initial Verdict: Update

With so many security fixes on board, this is an easy one to recommend: update now.
