Apple Targets Annual Consumer Upgrades

One of Apple’s most important products of 2026 is the MacBook Neo. For many, it was the entry-level ‘cheap MacBook’ that the community demanded each year. For Apple, it opens the door to an annual refresh, with a new Neo arriving every 12 months.

MacBook Neo Benefits From Apple Silicon Yields

The MacBook Neo is designed around a chip that is replaced every year, suggesting a 12-month product cycle to take advantage of binned chips.

The MacBook Neo has proven to be a critical and commercial success. The high sales of the Neo prompted Apple to reopen its silicon production lines to ensure the supply of the A18 Pro chip. That kept the sales momentum rolling, but at the loss of the Neo’s financial advantages. The A18 Pro originally powered the iPhone 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max. Not every chip passed certification and a full complement of CPU and GPU cores; those with just one failed GPU core were quietly put aside before being reused in the MacBook Neo.

There’s one specification that the next MacBook Neo is almost guaranteed to receive. The A18 Pro was the lead chipset for the iPhone for just one year. When the iPhone 17 Pro arrived, the A19 Pro took over that lead. Just like the A18 Pro, the A19 Pro fabrication will include a significant volume of A19 Pro chipsets with one GPU core, which have already been paid for. There’s your MacBook Neo 2 update, the binned A19 Pro.

MacBook Neo Pricing Brings New Consumers Into Apple’s Cloud Services

Apple’s entry-level MacBook remains one of the best value-for-money laptops on the market.

The MacBook Neo has seen a mid-cycle price rise to $699, and reopening the A18 Pro fabrication line will have contributed, as will the crunch on memory and storage due to the rapacious demands of the AI industry. Yet the MacBook Neo remains the cheapest Mac in Apple’s portfolio. Assuming Apple holds the $699 price (or even cuts it to $599 for an entry-level MacBook Neo 2), the Neo will remain a value-for-money option for entering Apple’s ecosystem.

MacBook Neo Goal Is To Mirror the iPhone Replacement Cycle

Apple is pushing annual upgrades for the MacBook Neo, mirroring the iPhone’s 12-month hardware and software cycle.

Finally, you have the question about upgrades. Laptops are generally seen as major purchases intended for long-term use. Yet the MacBook Neo is priced and specced to match the iPhone 17. Apple’s faithful community will have synced up their mobile contracts to make an easy upgrade on a 12- or 24-month basis. Can the MacBook Neo make the jump to an annual upgrade, perhaps with the original MacBook Neo being passed over to other family members?

This is surely an endgame that Apple would love to see, the MacBook Neo upgrade cycle echoing a smartphone rather than a laptop, consumers realising there is a fixed launch window (much like the iPhone’s September tradition) and an economy fo scale across multiple portfolios that is incredibly difficult for rivals to echo.
