Apple’s macOS Beta Hides A Secret Siri AI Feature

Apple hopes 2026 will be the year of AI on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Tucked away in the public beta versions of macOS 27, which will become the default version at some point during Q4 2026, is a new tool to access Apple Intelligence features through Siri AI.

Apple Intelligence In macOS 27 Can Deliver New Siri AI Features

Apple has integrated contextual Siri AI text-editing tools into early macOS 27 beta builds via hidden FeatureFlags.

Discovered by Apple’s community on Reddit, on highlighting text, a small pop-up appears with contextual options including rewrite and proofread, edit with Siri or various summarizing options. These feel like ‘table stakes’ for AI in text editing, yet Apple has been deliberate in introducing Apple Intelligence across its platforms. The iPhone is leading the group, so the expansion of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI is pulling macOS forward.

It’s worth noting that this feature is not switched on when the beta is installed. FeatureFlags need to be overridden before restarting your Mac. Running beta code comes at the consumer’s own risk; diving into the settings to activate features not specifically enabled by Apple will increase that risk.

Apple Intelligence Features Suggest A Staggered Rollout For macOS 27

Apple may decide to postpone desktop Apple Intelligence utilities past the initial Q4 2026 macOS 27 release.

Although Siri AI’s text tool is included in the beta, there is no guarantee it will be in the initial release in October. macOS 26 Tahoe saw features held back from its initial release late last year that would appear in later version releases. If the text tool does not appear immediately, Apple may plan to roll it out later after gathering more feedback and usage data.

Given the tools on show in the macOS beta closely match those on iOS, coupled with Apple’s push to unify as many of its operating system features, there will be some cross-platform data to improve this part of Siri AI. Whether the Apple community embraces these features remains to be seen.

Techradar’s recent survey on consumer attitudes to AI shows a drop in the use of AI services such as Gemini and ChatGPT. Respondents noted concerns over privacy and dependence on the technology. How much of this carries over to services on the macOS desktop that support creativity rather than replace it will be key to growing the use of Siri AI.

Apple Intelligence’s Competitive Lag Demands New Market Timing

Apple faces market share friction as Apple Intelligence arrives two years behind rival Windows and Android AI platforms.

The romantic view of Apple when it introduces technology is that it arrives late but brings the best implementation. This isn’t always the case; the introduction of AirPower was quickly sidelined, and Apple returned to the industry standard. Apple Maps’ introduction, following Google Maps’ success, featured inaccurate navigation and satellite imagery.

Apple Intelligence is technically already released, but its feature set is significantly behind both Android smartphones and Windows desktops. Both iOS 27 and macOS 27 should be seen as Apple’s first significant move (albeit 30 months after the first announcements at WWDC 2024). Apple is still taking it slowly, as the hidden AI features show, but it is running out of time to deliver the full experience.
