The Toronto Blue Jays have spent much of the season shuffling organizational depth as injuries and roster movement have created opportunities throughout the minor leagues. Catching depth, in particular, became a focus after an unexpected injury forced the organization to look outside the system.

That search led the Blue Jays to sign an experienced minor league backstop with five professional seasons under his belt. However, the partnership proved to be short-lived before another roster move brought the experiment to an abrupt end.

Toronto Blue Jays Cut Catcher After Alejandro Kirk Injury Update

The Blue Jays’ affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats released Adam Hackenberg on Tuesday, according to the official transaction log.

Hackenberg initially joined the Blue Jays as the organization sought reinforcements behind the plate, following a significant injury to veteran Alejandro Kirk.

“After their top backstop was badly injured, the Jays signed free agent catcher Adam Hackenberg to a minor league contract and assigned him to Triple-A Buffalo,” JP Hoornstra reported at the time for The Big Lead. “Hackenberg, 26, is a veteran of five professional seasons (2021-25), all with the Chicago White Sox organization.”

The move appeared to provide experienced organizational depth, but Hackenberg’s stay with the Blue Jays organization ultimately lasted only a short time before his release. Now that Kirk appears to be healthy, appearing in the vast majority of the team’s games this month, it seems the organization is no longer interested in carrying Hackenberg in the lower levels.

Former Chicago White Sox Catcher Built On Family Legacy Before Toronto Blue Jays Cut

Before joining the Blue Jays, Hackenberg established himself as one of the White Sox’s more intriguing catching prospects while building on a strong athletic family background. One of his brothers, Christian Hackenberg, enjoyed a standout career as the quarterback for Pennsylvania State University.

“Work put in by Christian, who is now coaching high school football in New Jersey while working for a tech company and doing some media, made it easy for the rest of the Hackenbergs, according to Adam,” Scott Merkin wrote for MLB.com. “They watched him get up for 6 a.m. workouts and it just became what they did as a family.”

That work ethic helped carry him through five seasons in the White Sox organization before he reached free agency.

Although his stint with Toronto ended quickly, Hackenberg remains just 26 years old and has accumulated valuable professional experience. Catchers with upper-level minor league experience often receive additional opportunities as organizations deal with injuries and roster turnover throughout the season.
