Packy Naughton expected his professional baseball career to end much differently. The left-hander spent years battling through injuries, multiple elbow surgeries and lengthy rehabilitation assignments in hopes of returning to the mound for the St. Louis Cardinals organization.

Instead, the 30-year-old announced his retirement this week, after his latest comeback attempt was cut short by more elbow trouble. But immediately after stepping away as a player, Naughton has found a new role with the organization that allows him to return and remain an integral part of the Cardinals family.

St. Louis Cardinals Surprise Retiree Quickly Returns In New Role

Naughton shared the emotional news of his retirement in a post on social media, explaining that injuries ultimately made the decision for him.

“People always tell you to play until they take the jersey off your back,” Naughton wrote in an Instagram post. “I truly believed that’s how my career would end. Unfortunately, it came sooner than I had hoped. After multiple elbow surgeries, countless hours of rehab, and giving everything I had to get back on the mound, my body has made the decision for me. My elbow just can’t do it anymore.”

That retirement, however, didn’t mark the end of his relationship with the Cardinals.

“Packy Naughton will move into a coaching role for St. Louis Cardinals organization for the remainder of this season,” the St. Louis Post-Dispatch’s Derrick Goold reported. “He will be based in Jupiter and get an opportunity to explore if coaching is something he’d like to pursue. Has a lot of fans within (the) club.”

The move allows Naughton to remain in professional baseball while beginning what could become a productive new phase in his career.

St. Louis Cardinals’ Injury Comeback Falls Short, Leads To Sudden Retirement

Naughton’s retirement followed another difficult attempt to return from injury earlier this season.

“In his first innings since 2024, Naughton struck out three batters and allowed a run in 2 1/3 innings,” Daniel Guerrero reported for the Dispatch. “Elbow discomfort forced him to leave in the middle of the first at-bat of an April 8 outing with Memphis.”

That outing proved to be his final appearance as a professional pitcher.

Naughton’s path to the majors was an unconventional one. A ninth-round draft pick out of Virginia Tech by the Cincinnati Reds, he eventually reached the big leagues with the Los Angeles Angels in 2021 before later joining the Cardinals.

Although persistent elbow injuries prevented him from extending his playing career, the Cardinals clearly valued his experience and presence enough to immediately offer him a coaching opportunity.
