Conor McGregor suffered a knee injury on Saturday night in the main event of UFC 329 that led to a first-round TKO loss to Max Holloway. McGregor took to social media early on Sunday to discuss the injury and to express his feelings. Let’s talk MMA.

Key Facts At A Glance

  • Result: Max Holloway def. Conor McGregor, TKO (injury), R1, 1:09
  • Injury: Right knee, reported by the UFC 329 broadcast as an internal injury
  • McGregor’s claim: No pre-existing injury, the damage came out of nowhere
  • Dana White’s read: Assumes a blown ACL, doctors agree
  • Brian Sutterer’s read: Meniscus more likely than ACL, possibly pre-existing
  • Official diagnosis: Still not released

What Did Conor McGregor Say About His Knee Injury?

McGregor left T-Mobile Arena without speaking to anyone, skipping both his Octagon interview and the post-fight press conference. Spinning Backfist caught video of him leaving the arena.

He surfaced on social media hours later with a raw, short statement.

“My head gasket is gone,” he wrote, before describing himself as being in a very dark place and calling the experience hell. It was the first word from a fighter who had spent five years selling this comeback, and it landed like a eulogy.

The tone matters. This is the same man who fought Chad Mendes on a torn ACL and Khabib Nurmagomedov on a broken foot, and he sounds finished rather than defiant.

Did Conor McGregor Enter UFC 329 Injured?

The speculation started before McGregor said a word. UFC production replayed footage of him staggering backward after a warmup kick, and separate video showed him losing his balance backstage while removing his shoes.

McGregor pushed back directly, insisting he carried no injury into the fight and that he had been throwing kicks, planting and jumping throughout camp and backstage minutes before the walk. He says the knee failure came out of nowhere.

Dana White backed him at the post-fight press conference, arguing there were no signs of trouble at the ceremonial weigh-in and that somebody would have noticed given how many millions watched McGregor rush Holloway.

What Do Doctors Think Is Wrong With McGregor’s Knee?

The medical reads split. White said the UFC is assuming a blown ACL and that team doctors agree, echoing former NFL team physician David Chao, who flagged concern for the ACL and MCL plus a possible patella subluxation, as I covered in the early diagnosis breakdown.

Dr. Brian Sutterer sees it differently. Reviewing the tape, he said he never saw the classic shift that accompanies an obvious ACL tear and ranked a meniscus injury as the likelier culprit, one that may have already been there and worsened on the landing.

The stakes in that distinction are enormous. A meniscus tear can mean one to six months out. An ACL means a year or more, and at 37, that is a different conversation entirely.

What’s Next For Conor McGregor?

Nothing gets decided until imaging comes back, and until then the aftermath is all speculation. Holloway has already offered to wait, saying he would return in 2027 and run it back a third time.

McGregor closed his Sunday posts somewhere unexpected, with a spiritual message professing his Christian faith.

It’s terrible to have seen McGregor’s legs crumble beneath him and for so many in the building and watching at home to be disappointed by his inability to perform. However, if Sutterer is correct and the injury is his meniscus, a six-month rehabilitation is possible. There would still be a chance he could fight in early 2027, but we won’t know for sure until he’s officially diagnosed.

One thing seems certain, McGregor is down but undeterred.
