The Los Angeles Dodgers have built one of baseball’s deepest pitching pipelines by consistently identifying overlooked talent, whether through the draft, international signings or the undrafted free-agent market.

Even after another MLB Draft concluded, the organization continued adding arms capable of developing into future contributors. While these signings rarely generate major headlines immediately, the Dodgers have developed a reputation for turning under-the-radar acquisitions into legitimate prospects.

That trend continued with the signing of former Jacksonville University left-hander Alex Walsh.

“Walsh has signed an undrafted free agent contract with the Los Angeles Dodgers,” his alma mater reported. “The signing comes after an impressive summer in which Walsh participated in a private workout with the Dodgers in mid-June before joining the Williamsport Crosscutters of the MLB Draft League. The veteran left-hander made three appearances, totaling nine innings, as he continued to showcase his abilities in front of Major League scouts.”

Los Angeles Dodgers Turn To Undrafted Southpaw For Pitching Depth

Walsh’s signing followed an impressive final collegiate campaign that put him firmly on the radar of professional organizations.

“A steady presence at the front of Jacksonville’s rotation, Walsh capped his senior season as one of the ASUN Conference’s top pitchers,” Jackson University added. “The left-hander earned Third Team All-ASUN honors, was named the ASUN Scholar-Athlete of the Year and collected ASUN Pitcher of the Week recognition following a dominant outing against Queens in which he tossed six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out a season-high eight batters. Walsh finished the 2026 campaign with an 8-3 record and a 3.91 ERA across 15 starts, logging 73.2 innings while striking out 74 batters.”

That combination of durability and strikeout production made Walsh one of the more accomplished pitchers available after the draft concluded. And evidently he impressed the Dodgers enough to land a deal.

Los Angeles Dodgers Continue Searching For Hidden Gems

By signing on with the Dodgers as an undrafted free agent, Walsh joins an increasingly important avenue of player acquisition across Major League Baseball. Recently, the Dodgers’ division rival found a hidden gem through the process.

“Players can sign these types of deals for up to $150,000 without counting toward a team’s draft bonus pool,” Baseball American explained. “In recent years, there’s a track record of at least some of these signings ultimately playing their way into their team’s respective Top 30s. The (San Francisco) Giants’ Bo Davidson is the most prominent example, as the 24-year-old outfielder has gone from being undrafted to cracking the Top 100 Prospects list.”

The Dodgers have repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to invest in overlooked talent, giving players multiple pathways into professional baseball. Walsh’s private workout ultimately opened that door, and he’ll now begin trying to prove he can become the latest undrafted signing to exceed expectations in one of baseball’s premier player-development systems.
