Disney-Pixar’s “Toy Story 5,” starring the voices of Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack, is new in theaters — and the action doesn’t end with the final scene in the movie before the credits roll.

Directed by Finding Nemo and WALL-E filmmaker Andrew Stanton, Toy Story 5 opens in theaters nationwide on Friday. The franchise, of course, kicked off in 1995 with Toy Story, followed by Toy Story 2 in 1999 and Toy Story 3 in 2010. Toy Story 5 comes six years after the fourth film in the series, which was released in 2019.

Toy Story 5 moves the story forward to the age of digital devices, as the parents of 8-year-old Bonnie (voice of Scarlett Spears) get the young girl a Lilypad (Greta Lee) to help her make new friends. Immediately enamored with Lilypad, Bonnie shows less attention to her faithful toys, including Jessie the Cowgirl (Cusack) and Buzz Lightyear (Allen).

When Bonnie is invited to a sleepover with her new friends in her Lilypad chat group, Jessie and her horse, Bullseye, try to join her for the trip, but are left behind in the car after the girl’s friends make fun of her for still playing with toys. Trying to find their way back to Bonnie, Jessie and Bullseye’s path leads them on a trail to their past, as well as a potentially a new future with a farm girl named Blaze (Mykal-Michelle Harris). However, Buzz isn’t going to give up on finding Jessie and Bullseye, so he and Woody (Hanks) embark on a mission to bring the two of them home.

Note: The next section contains major spoilers from “Toy Story 5.”

What Happens During The End Credits Of ‘Toy Story 5’?

Toy Story 5 begins on a deserted island, where a lost shipping container carrying dozens of boxes of Buzz Lightyear action figures has crashed ashore. When one of the action figures frees himself from his packaging, he goes on to free all the other Buzzes from their boxes and activates their electronic features.

Throughout the movie, the Buzz Lightyear brigade goes on a mission to find Star Command, which eventually leads them to Jessie. When the group of space toys meets Lilypad, Jesse, Woody, and the original Buzz Lightyear are stunned to learn that the new versions of Buzz have the capability to convert into drones, a helpful feature that helps the toys when they are in peril.

Like several previous Disney-Pixar releases — including Toy Story 3 and Toy Story 4 — Toy Story 5 has an end credits scene. Midway through the end credits, a group of kids exit a school bus and run to the playground. One boy, who doesn’t appear to have any friends, all of a sudden is stunned when one of the Buzz Lightyear drones flies down to him. Immediately after, the rest of the Buzz drones descend upon the playground to every student playing there. Even an adult, who appears to be the school’s principal, is delighted to get a new drone, which he quickly hides behind his back.

As all the kids begin playing with their new Buzz Lightyear toys, the shot quickly pans to the side of the schoolyard, where a student pulls an upgraded version of Buzz’s nemesis (and father), the Evil Emperor Zurg, out of his backpack. The scene wraps up when Zurg says, “We meet again, my son!”

While sometimes end credits scenes give a hint to a potential sequel, in Toy Story 5 it appears that the purpose is to bookend a scene from earlier in the film when the vintage version of Buzz reveals to the high-tech versions of the space rangers that Zurg is their father.

While Toy Story 5 doesn’t have a post-credits scene, Lilypad and the toy Pizza Sunglasses appear as the credits wind down to perform a rap song that Lilypad began to play earlier in the film.

The song gives Pizza with Sunglasses a chance to shine since the character is voiced by Grammy winner and Super Bowl LX halftime show performer Bad Bunny. Also joining in the performance are Rex (Wallace Shawn), Trixie (Kristen Schaal), Dolly (Bonnie Hunt), Mrs. Potato Head (Anna Vocino), Forky (Tony Hale) and Mr. Pricklepants (John Hopkins).

Rated PG, Toy Story 5 opens in theaters nationwide on Friday.
