For many international stars, a stint in Major League Baseball becomes only one chapter of a much larger baseball legacy. That has certainly been true for former San Francisco Giants infielder Hwang Jae-gyun, whose career included championships, international tournaments and nearly two decades as one of South Korea’s most recognizable players.
Although his time with the Giants lasted just one season, Hwang built a reputation as one of the Korean Baseball Organization’s most durable and respected veterans — a career that is now set to receive one final celebration.
Former San Francisco Giants’ Infielder Sets Retirement Ceremony Date
The next milestone in Hwang’s career will come next month when fans officially say goodbye during an upcoming Korean Baseball Organization (KBO) game.
“The retirement ceremony date for ‘Iron Man’ Hwang Jae-gyun has been officially revealed to baseball fans,” South Korea’s Chosun Daily reported. “Hwang Jae-gyun will throw the ceremonial retirement first pitch on Aug. 8 against the Suwon Lotte Giants.”
The ceremony recognizes one of the most accomplished careers in modern Korean baseball, with Hwang earning the nickname “Iron Man” because of his durability and longevity throughout nearly two decades of professional play.
His resume extends far beyond his brief stop in San Francisco.
“He played for the (Kiwoon) Heroes and Lotte before playing in the major leagues for the San Francisco Giants, and before the 2018 season he joined (KBO team) KT, signing two free-agent contracts of four years for 8.8 billion won and four years for 6 billion won,” Chosun Daily reported. “He won a Golden Glove in 2020, wore the national team jersey at the 2014 Asian Games, the 2015 Premier12, the 2018 Asian Games, the 2019 Premier12 and the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and served as KT captain in 2021, leading the team to a championship and earning the title of championship captain.”
San Francisco Giants Chapter Was Brief But Memorable For Korean Baseball Legend
While Hwang ultimately made his greatest impact in the KBO, reaching the majors fulfilled a longtime goal.
“Hwang signed a minor league contract with the Giants in January 2017 that paid a prorated $1.5 million in the majors,” JP Hoornstra noted for The Big Lead. “The third baseman was 29 at the time, and coming off a career year in the KBO (.335/.394/.570 in 127 games). But Hwang spent most of the 2017 season with the Giants’ Triple-A affiliate, and returned to his native Korea after just one year. He went 8-for-52 (.154) in the big leagues with one home run and five RBIs.”
Although his MLB numbers never matched his success overseas, Hwang returned home to become one of the faces of Korean baseball, eventually captaining KT Wiz to its first championship while representing South Korea in multiple international competitions.
His upcoming retirement ceremony will celebrate not only a former Giants infielder, but one of the defining players of his generation in Korean baseball.
