After losing his title at light heavyweight and a series of tough losses in the division, former 205-pound king Jamahal “Sweet Dreams” Hill is moving up to heavyweight. Hill made the announcement on social media on Tuesday.

Hill seems excited about his chances at heavyweight, but the stakes will be even higher for the former champion. Let’s talk MMA.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Former UFC light heavyweight champion Jamahal Hill is moving up to the heavyweight division.
  • Hill is 12-3 (1 NC) and arrives on a three-fight losing streak to Alex Pereira, Jiri Prochazka and Khalil Rountree Jr.
  • He called out Josh Hokit, fresh off a TKO of Derrick Lewis at UFC White House, as his ideal debut opponent.
  • Hill is targeting the UFC’s Madison Square Garden card, with late 2026 or early 2027 as fallback windows.

Why Is Jamahal Hill Moving Up To Heavyweight?

Coming off stoppage losses to Alex Pereira and Jiri Prochazka, there is no telling how long it would take Hill to get another shot at the title at light heavyweight. His path at heavyweight could be a cleaner one.

Hill is also on a three-fight skid that includes a decision loss to Rountree, and injuries such as knee surgery slowed his most recent run at 205. Walking away from the weight cut lets him reset in a heavyweight division that has been searching for fresh contenders behind its marquee names. The size jump is a gamble, but the upside is a faster route back to relevance.

Who Does Jamahal Hill Want For His Heavyweight Debut?

Hill’s first shot at heavyweight will likely come against a ranked fighter. Perhaps he could draw someone in the Top 10.

Hill named a specific target, though, calling out Josh Hokit for his debut and telling the surging contender to “come get some.” Hokit earned the buzz with a TKO of Derrick Lewis at UFC White House, a result that vaulted him up the contender conversation. A former champion against a hot newcomer is exactly the kind of fight the UFC could sell quickly.

When Will Jamahal Hill Return To The Octagon?

Hill says he has been working on this move for the last few months. Because of that, it stands to reason he could be making his heavyweight debut within the next couple of months.

When he announced the move, Hill pointed to the UFC’s annual Madison Square Garden card as his preferred stage. He stopped short of locking in a date, leaving late 2026 or early 2027 open if the timing does not line up. A signature venue would give his second act an immediate spotlight.

Can Jamahal Hill Succeed At Heavyweight?

It’s hard to say for sure. Hill has suffered some losses that make you question how much he still has left. That said, his quickness could be an asset at heavyweight. We’ll see if his power translates.

The blueprint exists, since Jon Jones built a Hall of Fame case by climbing weight classes, and Hill clearly wants to chase a second divisional title of his own. The risk is real against true heavyweight size and the heavier clinch pressure that comes with it, where Prochazka already showed how fast a single shot can end Hill’s night. If the speed and timing hold up against bigger, more hittable targets, “Sweet Dreams” could become one of the division’s most compelling wild cards.
