Since 2008, Marvel’s Saturday night Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con has become, arguably, the industry’s most anticipated annual announcement event. Entire phases have been announced there. Actors have appeared unannounced. Masks have come off, to mixed reviews. Here are five Comic Con reveals that changed the MCU.
The Avengers Are Assembled (San Diego Comic Con 2010)
Before there was a fully formed sense of a Marvel Cinematic Universe, there was that one Hall H event in July 2010. Kevin Feige brought out Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, and Samuel L. Jackson, the assembled cast of a film called The Avengers that had not yet begun production.
The concept of a shared cinematic universe, where characters from separate franchises would cross over into a single film, had been gestured at across Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, and Thor, but it had never been made concrete until that moment. The 2012 film that followed grossed $1.5 billion worldwide and changed the template of blockbuster filmmaking for the next decade.
Look at them, they were infants.
Josh Brolin Wears The Infinity Gauntlet (San Diego Comic Con 2014)
In 2014, Josh Brolin appeared in Hall H, slipped on the Infinity Gauntlet, and grinned. Thanos, the ominous figure glimpsed in the post-credits scene of The Avengers in 2012, had a face, and a two-time Oscar nominee face at that.
The Mad Titan’s reveal arrived years before Thanos would appear in earnest on screen (Avengers: Infinity War would not arrive until 2018) but it set the direction of an entire saga and established that Marvel was playing a long game across its entire franchise. You know, back when the long game meant something.
Brie Larson Is Captain Marvel (San Diego Comic Con 2016)
The reveal of Brie Larson as Carol Danvers in Hall H in 2016 was big, not just as a casting announcement but as an unprecedented statement of intent. The same announcement introduced Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. (Stephen) Strange, but Larson’s was different in that she was the MCU’s first solo female lead.
At the time, Larson had just won an Oscar for Room, and her casting seemed to point to an expansion of who Marvel movies were about.
Captain Marvel would not arrive in cinemas until March 2019, but the Hall H announcement set off three years of anticipation that culminated in the film becoming the first MCU solo female-led title to cross $1 billion at the global box office. But alas, we have not seen Larson in her role since 2023, and so far, she seems absent from the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday promotional material as well.
Robert Downey Jr. Unmasks As Doctor Doom (San Diego Comic Con 2024)
Who can forget the shock, horror moment when Marvel brought a row of actors in green hoods onto the stage? One by one the hoods came off, and the last one revealed… Robert Downey Jr., the man who had died on screen as Tony Stark in Avengers: Endgame in 2019. He was not returning as Iron Man. He was returning as Latverian dictator, Reed Richards’ lifelong nemesis, top 10 entry for greatest villain in the Marvel Comics, Victor von Doom. Simultaneously, the next Avengers film was renamed from the recently retired The Kang Dynasty (dropped after Jonathan Majors’s December 2023 assault conviction) to Avengers: Doomsday.
Ryan Gosling Is Ghost Rider (San Diego Comic Con 2026)
The fifth entry on this list happened hours ago. The announcement showed the Ghost Rider logo in darkness, and when the lights came on, there he was — Ryan Gosling! Yes, Oscar-nominated star of Barbie and lead of summer blockbuster smash Project Hail Mary, has been cast as Ghost Rider in a new standalone MCU film directed by Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy. The film is set to release in 2028.
BONUS: David Jonsson Is The Black Panther (San Diego Comic Con 2026)
Marvel has struggled since Endgame to pull off surprises at the scale it once did, so in terms of shock-value generation, Gosling’s Ghost Rider casting was definitely the marquee headliner. And although there is little doubt he would do a great job, I personally found much more joy in David Jonsson’s casting announcement as the new Black Panther (!!). He will play T’Challa’s son in the muchly anticipated third Black Panther film. Ryan Coogler, fresh off multiple Oscar wins for Sinners, will be back to direct, and Letitia Wright and Winston Duke will return as Shuri and M’Baku respectively.
