Gina Carano lost in 17 seconds, but she broke her silence following the loss to Ronda Rousey on Saturday night, and the MMA pioneer didn’t sound like a loser.

Carano detailed the amazing sacrifice she had to make to get in shape for the fight, to make weight and to be ready to compete. Depending on how you look at it, the 44-year-old might have lost the battle, but won an even more important war.

  • Fighter: Gina Carano
  • Age: 44
  • Layoff Before Fight: 17 years
  • Result: Submission loss to Ronda Rousey (armbar, 17 seconds)
  • Event: MVP MMA 1 (Rousey vs. Carano) on Netflix
  • Date: Saturday, May 16, 2026
  • Venue: Intuit Dome, Inglewood, California
  • Weight Cut: 100 pounds lost over roughly 20 months
  • First Public Comments: Instagram post, Monday, May 18

What Did Gina Carano Say After Losing to Ronda Rousey?

Carano spoke via her IG account on Monday, and there was depth, reflection and honesty.

She called the night “one of the best rides of my life” and said she felt locked in on fight night with “no fear just focused positive adrenaline,” but also wrote that her “heart is heavy” and called the loss “very humbling.” Carano praised Rousey directly, writing that she “found a beautiful woman, wife, mother, daughter, sister and legend” and that the two “made history, again.”

Why Did Gina Carano Tap So Quickly?

Quite honestly, to save her arm.

Carano explained in her IG post that she “kicked when I should have moved and was down and done.” She wrote that her arm “had begun to crackle” and tapping was the only way to avoid a break.

The result wasn’t a major surprise to anyone who understands combat sports. Carano is 44. She hadn’t competed in 17 years. When she last competed, grappling hadn’t become a major staple in MMA. She was literally fighting the woman who made a ground game an absolute necessity in MMA. Perhaps 17 seconds is faster than we expected, but this was a massive mismatch from the beginning.

What Sacrifices Did Gina Carano Make for the Fight?

She didn’t detail them all, but all of us who work to stay in shape and to get or remain fit, it’s easy to imagine.

What Carano did share is the headline number: she lost 100 pounds in roughly 20 months of preparation. She trained in a caloric deficit for a year, called the process “physically the hardest thing I’ve ever done,” and said she felt “like a science experiment losing 100lbs.” She also passed every California State Athletic Commission test, including multiple drug screens, scans, and rehydration weigh-ins.

What’s Next for Gina Carano After the Rousey Loss?

The door is seemingly open for Carano to have another fight. Perhaps she gets matched up with a striker.

Carano wrote that “this is just the beginning” and said she can’t wait to see where she can push her body next. She also shared that Jon Jones and Cain Velasquez visited her table after the fight, with Jones telling her, “Do you know how big your balls have to be to get back in there after that long?”

Carano made a nice payday for herself and her family. She gained a bit more notoriety and could potentially get another opportunity to fight, if she is up to it. Perhaps the biggest plus is the weight loss. Carano lost 100 pounds to get in shape for the fight. If she can maintain her weight, she’s a healthier human being. That has to count for something.
