Four Google watches, believed to be the Pixel Watch 5 series wearables, have passed through FCC testing, paving the way for their announcement later this year.

The FCC has published documentation detailing the devices’ wireless testing. As usual, the full names of the gadgets haven’t been revealed in these filings, but they are identified as “wireless device” products from Google that can be used with a “metal strap” or “non-metal strap.” Assuming these are Pixel Watch 5 series smartwatches is not a grand leap.

The four models are dubbed the G0F3Y, G25QD, G1XJ6 and GFW3R. These names don’t give a huge amount away, but the deeper details suggest two of them have an LTE mobile internet antenna alongside Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, while the other two just have the latter.

Google’s G1XJ6 and GFW3R devices don’t have an LTE antenna listed, the G25QD and G0F3Y do.

Pixel Watch 5 Features

This is not a surprise, but the FCC filings do appear to reveal the cellular watches will stick with 4G/LTE rather than branching out to 5G. Then again, it’s on great loss considering the amount of data smartwatches need to actually download or stream.

It suggests the Pixel 5 series may have a similar roll-out to the Pixel Watch 4 family, in which there are 41mm and 45mm variants of the watch with either 4G or just Bluetooth and Wi-Fi.

The Pixel Watch 5 is expected to have an up-to 1.4in screen, just like the current model, and there have been no strong rumors to indicate any truly major upgrades.

In a bizarre turn of events, video game executive Randy Pitchford posted on X about finding what he believes to be a Pixel Watch 5 in the sea. From both front and rear, the device looks a lot like today’s Pixel Watch 4, with a similar heart rate array sensor arrangement and a return of the series’s signature domed glass front.

He made the post on May 31, and its veracity has predictably not been confirmed as yet. The watch’s markings suggest it’s a 45mm face design, consistent with this generation’s existing styles.

If the focus is not to be on watch design in the launch, Google may instead focus on the watch’s AI features, which will most likely be powered by Google Gemini. This is consistent with moves the company has made in other divisions, including Chromebooks and the upcoming Googlebook range, which is expected in the Fall.

The Google Pixel Watch 5 is expected to be announced at the next major Made by Google event, which typically take place in August.
