With this year being the 30th anniversary of the criminally underrated Gundam X, Bandai Spirits has some new toys planned to commemorate the anime.
Released back in 1996, Gundam X followed in the wake of Gundam Wing and was also a similarly alternate-timeline Gundam series.
The backdrop for Gundam X was also rather bleak, as it dealt with the remnants of a devastating war and the remaining super weapons, such as Gundams, hidden amongst the ruins.
Starting with the Gundam X, it could tap into energy from the Moon and unleash a hugely powerful Satellite Cannon attack.
However, to access the Gundam X and use the Satellite Cannon, you needed a G Controller.
This is the first of the two toys announced, with the Proplica G Controller set for release in February for 20,350 yen (or around $94 at the current exchange rate) and will be a Premium Bandai webshop exclusive.
The Proplica range of toys is meant as life-size recreations of “props” from various anime, and they are almost all absolutely wonderful and often feature various light and sound effects.
Japanese fans online also pointed out that Bandai released a G Controller toy back in the 90s, but this new one looks a lot more polished and impressive.
We then get to the second toy announced, and this is the upgrade to the Gundam X known as the Gundam Double X or Gundam DX.
This features two Satellite Cannons and is suitably overpowered, which by this point in the series’ storyline was somewhat necessary.
Now, we’ve already had a regular Robot Damashii toy of the Gundam Double X, and it was very nicely done. However, the Metal Robot Damashii toy line includes diecast, and that’s what this new toy will have to strengthen its internal skeleton and joints.
Personally, the Metal Robot Damashii toy line is probably my favorite. The toys aren’t overly big, but have amazing detailing and sculpts, backed up by sturdy diecast parts. As the Gundam Double X has to effectively transform at the rear to bring the twin Satellite Cannons to bear, the additional diecast here is most certainly welcome.
The price point and release date for this Metal Robot Damashii toy are currently unknown, but will likely be announced in the near future.
