Medieval city builder Manor Lords is finally out, but already players are running into one issue; how to increase the population of their towns. It’s not immediately obvious how to get more families into your region to beef up your workforce, but it’s actually a lot simpler than you might think.

As the most wish-listed game on Steam for weeks, thousands of players have jumped into Manor Lords throughout the launch day, but the one thing that seems to have people stumped is a lack of population growth. Once you manage to figure it out Manor Lords turns into a great game that will likely have you hooked for hours, but those first few hours can be frustrating without obvious signposts on how to grow the amount of people under your command.

How To Increase Population In Manor Lords

In order to grow your population and get more families in Manor Lords there are a number of criteria that need to be met, but the most important is your approval rating. Your approval rating is based on how much your current townsfolk like you, with things such as good food variety, nice homes and a good church giving you a positive rating. However, taxes, lack of food and illness can drop that rating right down, and if it goes below 50% no new families will move into your town.

If your approval rating is above 50% then at least one new family will automatically move in every month, with the possibility of more coming with higher approval ratings. They will, however, need a place to live so you will need at least one empty burgage plot for them to move into. If there isn’t a space plot for them to move into no new families will move in regardless of your approval level.

Providing you have an approval rating above 50% and a place for them to live then your population will naturally grow with new families moving in at the start of each month. However, you will need to make sure that you have enough food and fuel to sustain them, otherwise your town could end up shrinking.

Why Is My Manor Lords Population Decreasing?

In some cases, you will see that the population of your town is shrinking over time, and this is down to a low approval rating. If the people in your regions really dislike your leadership then they will start to leave, with the first families moving out when you go below 25% approval rating.

In order to stop this from happening you will need to keep your approval rating above 25%, which most of the time shouldn’t be too difficult. Providing you don’t force massive taxes onto your citizens and have enough food and fuel for them to survive they will generally be reasonably happy, which should give you a steady growth of the population.
