Topline

A consortium of investors including Jeff Bezos secured a minority stake in Liverpool FC on Friday, according to a statement from the team, marking Bezos’ first investment in a sports franchise.

Key Facts

The group including Bezos struck a deal with Fenway Sports Group for roughly 30% of the soccer club, according to multiple reports.

The consortium includes billionaires such as Bezos, Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin and the Mittal family, the latter of whom has built their fortune through ArcelorMittal, the world’s largest steelmaker.

Fenway Sports Group will maintain majority ownership and operational control of Liverpool FC, though CNBC reported the consortium will be capable of becoming the majority shareholder in the next year under the deal.

The deal values Liverpool FC at roughly $7.4 billion, according to The Guardian, which noted the agreement gives the consortium options to purchase a larger stake if Fenway Sports Group decides to sell.

Forbes Valuation

We estimate Bezos’ net worth at $274.1 billion as of Friday, making him the third-wealthiest person in the world behind Google co-founder Larry Page and Tesla chief Elon Musk. Saverin is worth an estimated $33 billion, while the Mittal family’s fortune was estimated at $17.2 billion in 2017.

Key Background

Fenway Sports Group acquired Liverpool FC in 2010 for $406 million, saving the team from the brink of collapse as it faced a massive gross debt load under former American owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett. The team had a spotty and at-times turbulent performance through much of the 2010s before former manager Jürgen Klopp elevated the franchise to its first modern Premier League title in 2019. The team has remained a powerhouse in English soccer since, capturing another Premier League title in the 2024 to 2025 season. Liverpool was ranked fourth in Forbes’ list of the world’s most valuable soccer teams earlier this year, with an estimated value of $6.2 billion.
