Your iPhone does so much, from surfing the web, to offering games and banking apps, that sometimes smaller details can slip through the cracks. If one of those details is the rather important one of the alarm clock and it has mysteriously gone silent, you’re not alone.

Some users have been reporting that the alarm on their iPhones have gone silent, which is not what you need on a Monday morning after a late Sunday night.

The answer, according to 9to5Mac, is to check that the settings on the iPhone haven’t been reset.

“We’re not sure how many users this affects, but we’ve heard from a small number of people who have noticed that their iPhone alarm sound has been recently changed to ‘None’, which means they go off silently,” the report said.

Right now, it’s not clear what could have caused this, though it’s possible that alarms which were set to the Classic tone, which may signify that they were set up some time ago.

Alarms on the iPhone are designed to sound even if the phone is in silent mode, so if yours is silent, that’s not right.

But alongside the extensive range of audio options, there’s one called None. If your iPhone alarm is not set to a ringtone but to none then, unsurprisingly, you’ll get a silent alarm at the appropriate time.

But there are other factors at play. “The volume level of normal alarms is set through Settings -> Sounds & Haptics. There’s a slider there that changes the volume for the ringtone and alert tones, which adjusts the volume of alarms, incoming call noises and some other notifications. If the ‘Change with Buttons’ toggle is enabled, this slider will change when you press the physical volume buttons. To ensure the alarm volume is always fixed at an audible level, disable the ‘Change with Buttons’ option.,” the report goes on.

There’s another thing: if the Face ID attention awareness feature is enabled, the sound of the alarm is turned down. The report advises going to Settings, then Face ID & Passcode and then Attention to disable the toggle for Attention-Aware Features.

It’s likely you might not be affected by this issue, but if you are, the above solutions should mean that you’ll be awakened with the right amount of sound for the time you’ve set.

Whether you’ll appreciate the noise when it happens is another matter.
