Is Manchester United Fit Enough For The New Season?

A familiar sinking feeling hit Manchester United on Saturday. Despite what many viewed to be a positive summer transfer window, Michael Carrick’s team suffered a disappointing 2-0 defeat to Hull City in its opening fixture of the 2026/27 Premier League season. It was a deserved defeat.

The promoted outfit outran and outfought United, especially in the first half when the damage was done by Semi Ajayi and Nobel Mendy who both found the back of the net. Hull was clearly ready for the opening fixture of the new campaign while Manchester United was sluggish. The difference in energy between the two teams was stark.

United’s performance raised questions about the team’s fitness levels. Like most Premier League managers, Carrick had numerous squad members at the 2026 World Cup. Some of Manchester United’s players reported late for pre-season which may have been a factor in the lacklustre display against Hull City.

Youri Tielemans was off the pace following his summer transfer from Aston Villa. Andrey Santos struggled to get on the ball with few options ahead of him when he did. Defensively, United was all over the place, but the backline wasn’t helped by a lack of protection from the players in front of them.

“The result’s the result,” said Carrick when asked about the damage done on opening weekend. “We got beat, we’re hurt and it’s not a nice feeling. It doesn’t mean it’s going to change the whole direction of how we’re going as a team or as a football club. It’s one game and results can happen in football, we all understand that. It’s not nice when they do, but it does happen.”

Next up, Manchester United will face another promoted team in the shape of Ipswich Town. The Tractor Boys earned a 2-1 win over Sunderland on the same day United suffered defeat to Hull City, making Ipswich dangerous opponents. The pressure is already on Carrick and his players to correct what went wrong in the first fixture.

The addition of Carlos Baleba from Brighton could help matters. The Cameroonian is known for his energy and field coverage. This is surely a big part of why Manchester United is reportedly close to making him its biggest, most expensive transfer of the summer window. A player like Baleba is clearly required.

As bad as the defeat to Hull was, United need not panic. There is widespread uncertainty among the Premier League’s biggest teams. There will be countless shock results over the course of the season. Nonetheless, Carrick must take note of the issues that cost his team on opening weekend.
