When Does God of War: Laufey Come Out?

Santa Monica Studio head of creative Cory Barlog set the date at the Comic-Con panel, and the studio posted it as a plain graphic reading 2.16.27.

Barlog also confirmed the game will ship on physical discs. That lands with some weight given Sony’s announcement weeks ago that it plans to stop producing physical discs entirely from 2028.

Who Is Laufey in God of War?

Laufey, better known to players as Faye, is a Jötun with the gift of foresight and the original bearer of the Leviathan Axe. She dies before the events of the 2018 game, which makes her the first protagonist in a mainline God of War who is not Kratos.

The PlayStation Blog synopsis picks up after her funeral, with Faye waking in the Everywhen, the afterlife of the gods, to find that the plans she made to protect Kratos and Atreus are unraveling. Sekhmet, the Egyptian goddess of war, turns up in the reveal trailer as a major antagonist. I broke down the rest of what we know in my full Laufey explainer.

Is Kratos Coming Back After God of War: Laufey?

Barlog opened the panel with it. The next God of War stars Kratos, and it connects directly to Faye’s story rather than branching off from it. That answers the question a chunk of the fanbase has been asking since the reveal split the room in June.

I love Kratos as much as anyone, and that’s why it made my heart smile to learn there’s a sequel to Laufey already planned that will give us another chance to throw hands as Kratos. It also appears Sony may have dropped the news about the Kratos-led sequel to calm the concerns of gamers who frowned at Laufey being the face of the franchise.

It seems clear, this is just one iteration in the series, but Sony was likely urged to reassure hardcore fans that Kratos is not gone for good. It remains to be seen if that will impact the reception for Laufey once it releases.

What Else Do We Know About God of War: Laufey?

The cast is deep. Deborah Ann Woll plays Faye, Christopher Judge returns as Kratos, Jack Quaid voices a character named Phranque, and Perlina Lau plays Rue. Ariel Lawrence is directing.

Santa Monica now has four God of War projects moving at once. Laufey has its date, the Kratos game has none, the Greek Trilogy Remake announced in February is early in development with TC Carson back as Kratos, and the Prime Video series is paused after actor Ryan Hurst was injured and recast. That is a lot of runway for a franchise that spent three years quiet, and February 2027 is where it starts, roughly three months after GTA 6 clears the calendar.
