Leviatán has won the Valorant Masters London tournament after beating Paper Rex 3-2 in the grand final earlier today.
The victory sees Leviatán take home the $350,000 first place prize, as well as the Master’s trophy, in what is one of the most impressive wins in Valorant history. After dominating the Swiss Stage, Leviatán were knocked to the lower bracket in the first match of the playoffs, and then went on an incredible lower bracket run to claim the trophy.
The South American roster of Leviatán took down Global Esports and NRG in the Swiss Stage to advance to the playoff bracket, but were then met with a formidable foe in the shape of Paper Rex. Leviatán would lose that match 2-0, but it ended up being their only loss of the tournament.
In the lower bracket Leviatán took down some massive names including VCT Europe champions Team Heretics, XLG Esports, Team Vitality and VCT China champions EDward Gaming. Leviatán were arguably considered underdogs in all these matches, but overcame the odds to make the final and set up a rematch against Paper Rex.
In the final it was Paper Rex who started off strong, with a dominant 13-2 win to kick off the final. Leviatán then took map two, before Paper Rex went to championship point by taking map three. With their backs against the wall Leviatán managed to win a close map four, where at times it looked like Paper Rex had the trophy in the bag, to set up a decisive final map. Then in map five Leviatán took things to another level, dominating the map to take a convincing 13-5 win and pull off one of the greatest lower bracket runs ever seen in Valorant.
With Masters London now in the books, most of the teams competing at the event will make the short journey across the English Channel to France for the Esports World Cup. Given their result in London, Paper Rex will no doubt be considered a favourite, but Leviatán failed to qualify for the event, so will be heading back home instead. That means other contenders such as Team Vitality and EDward Gaming have a solid chance of making the final and even taking the entire competition.
