Samsung’s iPhone Fold rival, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, is coming this summer. That looks certain. The device has received certification from regulatory authorities confirming its existence, and we’ve even seen some early images that show the phone’s new wide shape.

Now, a fresh leak has revealed how Samsung will shrink the selfie camera on the inner display, alongside details about the phone’s new ultra-wide shape and how it will differ from the upcoming Apple iPhone Fold.

Read on for more, and don’t forget to subscribe to my newsletter for instant deal updates.

Samsung To Debut New Selfie Camera Tech In The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide

Samsung tipster Ice Universe posted new images of the Galaxy Z Fold 8’s new selfie camera tech on X today, which revealed a significantly smaller hole on the main display. The new punch-hole measures in at 2.5mm in diameter compared to the Galaxy Z Fold 7’s 3.7mm sensor. A huge 32% reduction in size.

Samsung has reduced the footprint of its foldable phone selfie cameras over the years. The brand started with a large cutout on the main screen (which impacted content) in the early iterations of the Galaxy Z Fold series, to moving it under the display for a more seamless experience—but at the cost of worse camera quality.

Finally, Samsung went back to where it started with a physical punch-hole on the main screen in the Galaxy Z Fold 7. A visible, and physical, camera sensor on the folding screen is coming back for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 series, but it will at least make a smaller splash on the inner screen.

Ice Universe didn’t reveal any specification details about the camera, but it will be interesting to see if Samsung can keep the 10MP sensor found in the Fold 7 while reducing its size for the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide vs. The Competition

Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Apple’s iPhone Fold have some early competition from the Huawei Pura X Max, which launched last week with its own ultra-wide shape. Don’t be surprised if we see other Android smartphone makers launching similar devices ahead of the two juggernauts dominating the space later this year.

Ice Universe put together a mockup of the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide (based on official specifications) against the Huawei phone, and it’s clear they have a similar look but with some important differences.

The Samsung phone will be slimmer both folded (9.8mm vs. 11.2mm) and unfolded (4.3mm vs. 5.2mm). This is likely down to Samsung’s device slimming technology that debuted in the Galaxy S25 Edge last year. That included a new mounting system, which allowed components to be placed closer together on the motherboard—alongside a new heat management system and shrunken 200MP camera sensor.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will also have a 4:3 ratio, which will mean a much wider display than the Galaxy Z Fold 7 and a more familiar tablet-like experience for watching videos. The iPhone Fold is expected to have the same 4:3 aspect ratio to match an Apple iPad.

The Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide will also feature a squarer design than the Huawei Pura X Max and—if we’re to believe the dummy production models—the iPhone Fold, both of which have rounded corners.

That means Samsung is sticking with the pointier style of the Galaxy Z Fold series on the Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide. Your mileage may vary, but sharper corners on foldable phones means the display is closer to the edge, which I prefer. Rounded corners, like those on the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold and the upcoming iPhone Fold, leave a large triangular bezel on the hinge side of the phone that just doesn’t look flush. That will be a clear design difference between two phones that are expected to look and operate in similar ways everywhere else.
