When Apple releases the next iPhone update, iOS 26.6, it could be the last major update in the current cycle — iOS 27 is already on its second public beta. Here’s exactly when to expect it and what you’ll find there.
Apple iOS 26.6: Release Date
Apple has already released a full selection of betas for iOS 26.6. These began on Tuesday, May 26 with the first developer beta. Public betas joined in from Monday, June 29. After five developer betas, the release candidate — as the name suggests, it’s usually the last before general release — dropped on Monday, July 20.
Since there hasn’t been an adjustment to this release candidate, which happens occasionally, it’s safe to assume that the general release will happen next week.
Monday, July 27 is favorite, though it’s just possible that Tuesday, July 28 could be in the frame. Recently, releases have been prompt, though, so check your iPhone after 10 a.m. Pacific, 1 p.m. Eastern, 6 p.m. U.K. on Monday.
Apple iOS 26.6: What’s In The Release
Much of the beta release program has been concerned with stability rather than new features. The latest Apple notes from the release candidate, which are sparse, read: “This update includes bug fixes, security updates and optimizes the Spotlight index to prepare for iOS 27.”
In other words, there’s quite a bit of prep going on here for what’s coming next in iOS 27, something Apple can do because the next-gen software will be compatible with every iPhone that can run iOS 26.
“When the first iOS 27 developer beta arrived, testers found that Spotlight indexing could take quite a while—up to a week or longer. By getting the process started in advance with iOS 26.6, users should have a smoother initial experience when iOS 27 launches,” 9to5Mac reported.
Security Fixes And Minor Feature Changes
The next software also includes code which indicates that a new anti-theft feature is coming, but there’s no certainty it will debut in iOS 26.6.
And one small piece of stocktaking: if you reach your maximum number of contacts you have blocked, you’ll be notified.
Beyond that, there are not expected to be any major new features, though security patches are likely to be part of the mix.
