Olivia Rodrigo Earns Her First New Pop No. 1 In Half A Decade

Olivia Rodrigo’s debut album Sour produced several huge hits, ones which fans continue to consume in enormous numbers. The singer’s ability to straddle the line between rock and pop helped her find fame and rack up huge radio wins on Billboard’s Pop Airplay chart, and she’s still balancing her success on lists focused on those styles today.

Two of her first smashes worked their way all the way to No. 1 on that list, but since then, Rodrigo’s music has performed even better on many rock-focused rankings than at pop radio. That changes this week as one of her more recent promotional tunes rises to the summit on one of the more competitive airplay rosters published by Billboard – which is all about pop music – and she finds herself back on the throne after years away.

Olivia Rodrigo Returns to No. 1 on the Pop Chart

“Drop Dead” rises two spaces to No. 1 on the Pop Airplay chart this week. The tally – one of three pop-focused radio tallies published by Billboard, alongside the Adult Pop Airplay and Adult Contemporary lists – tracks the most successful songs at mainstream top 40 radio stations throughout the United States. A tune climbs or falls based on its total estimated audience reach.

Olivia Rodrigo Scores Her Third Pop Airplay No. 1

“Drop Dead” becomes Rodrigo’s third career No. 1 on the Pop Airplay chart and her first in half a decade. She initially conquered the tally with “Drivers License,” which reached the summit in March 2021, less than two months after debuting. By the end of that summer, “Good 4 U,” also featured on Sour, had worked its way to first place as well. Both tracks dominated for at least a month, and each needed only about two months before they became the most successful song at pop radio in the nation.

Olivia Rodrigo Recently Reached a Milestone 10 Hits

Rodrigo has now placed a milestone 10 tunes on the Pop Airplay ranking, and all but two have reached the top 10. “Bad Idea Right?” stalled just outside that region at No. 11, while “Stupid Song” – also featured on her latest album, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love alongside “Drop Dead” – has thus far climbed to No. 17. That may not be the end of its run, though, as the single is still growing on several other radio tallies.

“Drop Dead” Rules One Pop Chart and Peaks on Two Others

“Drop Dead” served as the first single from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, and it arrived in mid-April, weeks before the album. The tune reached the Pop Airplay chart in early May, shortly after its release, and it has since appeared on all three of Billboard’s pop radio rankings. As it rises to No. 1 on the Pop Airplay tally, “Drop Dead” holds at its all-time highs of Nos. 7 and 17 on the Adult Pop Airplay and Adult Contemporary rosters, respectively.

Olivia Rodrigo’s “Stupid Song” Is Still Growing

At the same time that “Drop Dead” reaches its zenith, “Stupid Song,” the third single from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, also establishes new peaks on two radio rankings. The cut climbs to No. 29 on the Adult Pop Airplay chart and No. 36 on the broader Radio Songs tally. It also holds at its aforementioned No. 17 ceiling on the Pop Airplay roster. Both of Rodrigo’s two radio wins establish new high points on different rundowns this frame.

Olivia Rodrigo Charts 11 Songs in America

11 Rodrigo songs appear on at least one Billboard chart this week, and all of them come from You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love. While “Drop Dead” and “Stupid Song” are enjoying a warm welcome at pop radio, “The Cure,” the second single released between them, as well as album cuts like “Honeybee,” “Expectations” and “Maggots for Brains,” are still present on rankings such as the Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart and the Billboard Hot 100.
