The shock, turmoil, and heartache of being handed a pink slip or weathering a downsizing is hard to fathom. Yet, after a recent round of Oracle layoffs, there’s now a way to peek behind the corporate curtain. Several workers at the Texas-based tech giant expressed the shock of being part of what one former employee called an RIF (or Reduction in Force). Others expressed hope that another role would materialize quickly, and asked for any networking leads.

Even for those who are optimistic about the next chapter, it’s heartbreaking to see so many people posting on a platform that has become the place to talk about work opportunities and find a job. The Oracle layoffs could impact “thousands” and was originally reported by Business Insider.

“Yikes, I thought to myself, being one of the many, many folks impacted by recent layoffs at Oracle. But it happens, and I will enjoy sleeping in this morning,” said one poster.

“It’s a strange feeling, but I’m incredibly proud of what I was able to build over the past four years…and grateful for the experience, mentors, and teammates along the way,” said another.

Several posts expressed sadness about the sudden job loss while also staying hopeful about finding a new chapter. In reviewing dozens of posts, I found most started out with the heartbreaking news about being downsized. Several expressed hope even in the upheaval. One concluded: “It is just a job after all.”

I contacted Oracle for an official comment about the layoff but have not heard back.

Why people are choosing LinkedIn to post about the Oracle layoffs

LinkedIn has found a niche in social media as the place to discuss productivity, business, leadership, and other workplace issues.

A recent report found that LinkedIn is the best platform for lead generation and business-to-business marketing. A more scientific study from last year concluded that LinkedIn is the best place to form work-related connections.

It’s no wonder LinkedIn is the platform many of us use to talk about work, even when there is devastating news about layoffs or other hardships in our jobs.

I’ve experienced sudden job loss in the past, and it does feel like you’ve been blindsided. There’s often no warning with a layoff because the decision was likely made as a cost-cutting measure and not related to job performance.

It’s a wise move to post about your employment change on a platform that has job postings available (similar to Indeed.com) and easy tools to help you find hiring managers. You never know who might see your post and reach out with a new job opportunity, and it’s also an excellent way to commiserate with others who are impacted or have experienced a layoff.

It’s healthy to express how you are feeling, although it’s best to avoid giving out too many personal details. My advice about the Oracle layoffs or any sudden job change is to stick to the facts about your own position without relaying too many details about how the employer made the decision. Once it’s public on social media, it stays public forever.
