The Philadelphia Phillies are once again jockeying for a playoff bye coming out of the All-Star break, but with the consistent October aspirations in recent years have come a consistent search for organizational depth.
While much of the attention remains focused on potential win-now trade deadline additions, the front office has quietly continued adding younger talent with upside.
Philadelphia’s outfield has been one of the organization’s most closely watched positions throughout the season. Brandon Marsh has emerged into an All-Star-caliber contributor, while younger players have continued battling for opportunities alongside him. But even with that progress, the Phillies continue looking for controllable young talent that could develop into future contributors.
Philadelphia Phillies Add Former Cleveland Guardians Outfield Prospect With Surprising Contract
The latest addition came just days after a surprising departure from another American League organization.
“Former Cleveland Guardians 24 (year-old) OF prospect Wuilfredo Antunez has signed a two-year minor league contract with the Philadelphia Phillies,” Guardians Prospective reported.
That unusual two-year minor league agreement gives Philadelphia additional time to evaluate a player who once ranked among Cleveland’s more intriguing young outfielders, though a multi-year minor-league deal for a relatively young and unproven outfielder is rare.
The timing of the signing is notable too, as Antunez became available after his time with Cleveland ended just days before, with the Phillies moving quickly and suggesting they had an eye on Antunez.
Philadelphia Phillies Add High-Upside Young Outfielder
Though uncommon, a two-year minor league contract provides stability for both player and organization while allowing the Phillies to see whether Antunez can regain the momentum he enjoyed last season as he bats .196 this season.
“He earned a spot representing the Guardians (in the Arizona Fall League) after his strong 2025 season,” Tim Stebbins wrote for MLB.com last year. “Though he was limited to two games before he was sidelined by right shoulder tendinitis, Antunez showed why he has increasingly been on the radar in Cleveland’s farm system.”
That injury interrupted what appeared to be some important development for the young outfielder, as he has struggled this season.
But the move still fits Philadelphia’s broader organizational philosophy: while the major league club remains focused on another postseason run, the Phillies have continued building depth behind their current outfield group with a two-year window in mind.
If Antunez can recapture the trajectory that made him a favorite prospect in the Guardians system, he could move up the Phillies ladder before the end of next season. Or he might find himself as some prospect capital included in a win-now deadline trade.
