The Philadelphia Phillies have spent much of the 2026 season navigating challenges beyond the typical injuries and roster decisions that arise for every playoff-focused contender.

The team has navigated a managerial change, questions about franchise slugger Bryce Harper’s “elite” status, a historic run by southpaw Cristopher Sanchez and more.

But few stories surrounding the franchise in the last year have been more concerning than that of reliever Daniel Robert.

Philadelphia Phillies Provide Health Update On Pitcher Who Collapsed On Mound

After appearing in 15 games for the Phillies last year, Robert suffered a scary medical setback as he closed out his season with a bullpen session. He collapsed on the mound and was resuscitated by Phillies personnel before being rushed to the hospital and receiving an implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD).

Then, in his first bullpen session following that incident, Robert collapsed on the mound again at the team’s development facility in late March.

“Robert, 31, collapsed on the pitcher’s mound next to the half-field following his first bullpen session since October, when he suffered a cardiac event during another bullpen session at Carpenter Complex,” MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki reported at the time. “The ICD triggered as he was coming off the mound on Sunday.”

While Robert never had the chance to contribute many innings for Philadelphia, he had worked his way to the major leagues after years in the minor leagues. But the right-hander’s season was interrupted before it truly began, leaving teammates, coaches and fans hoping primarily for positive medical updates rather than a quick return to the mound.

Now, the Phillies have received some clarity on Robert’s outlook. According to a medical update released this week, the 31-year-old will not return during the 2026 season and is instead focused on making his way back to professional baseball in 2027.

“He underwent a cardiac ablation procedure on April 3, 2026 with his treating cardiologist, Dr. Kim, at Emory Healthcare in Atlanta, GA to address a cardiac arrythmia that was picked up by his ICD (implant) on his most recent cardiac event on March 22, 2026,” the team reported, according to Phillies Nation’s Ty Daubert. “The procedure was successful and Daniel has been cleared to perform an activity progression by his treating cardiologist, which he will do under the guidance of his cardiology team. Daniel is focused on returning to pitch for the 2027 season and will utilize the time the remainder of this season to progress accordingly.”

The latest update represents encouraging news despite the lengthy recovery timeline. Robert has successfully undergone the procedure, has been cleared to begin an activity progression and remains focused on pitching again.

For the Phillies, the baseball implications are secondary. The organization now has confirmation that Robert will miss the remainder of 2026, but the far more important development is that the reliever continues to make progress in his recovery while targeting a return to professional baseball in 2027.
