The Philadelphia Phillies have leaned heavily on existing organizational depth throughout recent seasons, particularly behind the plate.

But as clubs continue shuffling Triple-A rosters during the heart of the minor league season, Philadelphia has quietly brought back a familiar catcher who knows the organization well and could provide some depth behind the usual trio of JT Realmuto, Rafael Marchan and Garrett Stubbs.

The move won’t immediately impact the major league roster, but it gives the Phillies another experienced option at a position where injuries can quickly test organizational depth. It also marks another stop in a winding professional journey for a former big league catcher who has spent the last several years battling adversity while searching for another MLB opportunity.

Philadelphia Phillies Bring Familiar Catcher Back After New York Yankees Release

The Phillies have re-signed 29-year-old backstop Payton Henry, just two days after he was released by the New York Yankees organization and just a few months after he left the Phillies’ minor league system in free agency, according to the official transaction log.

Henry has appeared in the major leagues previously with the Miami Marlins but has largely served as experienced Triple-A depth in recent years. While the signing may not generate headlines alongside Philadelphia’s playoff push, experienced catching depth often becomes increasingly valuable as organizations prepare for the stretch run.

Henry was drafted by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2016 and made his big-league debut with the Marlins in 2021. But he has only logged 43 big-league at-bats as he searches for a lasting minor-league opportunity.

“Traded to Milwaukee during the 2022-23 offseason, Henry has spent the last three years in the minors with the Brewers, (Toronto) Blue Jays, and Phillies without getting into another MLB game,” Mark Polishuk wrote for MLB Trade Rumors. “In 2024, Henry was limited to 27 games with Triple-A Buffalo after he was struck in the head by an opposing hitter’s backswing, and spent a three-month stint on the IL.”

That setback significantly slowed his momentum during what could have become an opportunity to return to the majors.

Even amid the frequent organizational movement, Henry has continued embracing each opportunity. Speaking earlier this year after joining the Yankees’ Triple-A affiliate, he acknowledged the competitive atmosphere surrounding the International League rivalry between that team and the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, where he will make his return with his new Phillies contract.

“For this area, I know it’s a big deal when we play each other,” Henry said, according to Scott Walsh of Pinstripe Alley . “Being on the other side, this team whooped our butts last year a few times. We kind of went back and forth. Hopefully, we can take the cake (this year) and play some good ball. It’s exciting for people around here. It makes it kind of cool and gives us a little more edge to play with.”

Now, Henry is back with an organization that knows him well.
