Ryan Gosling’s blockbuster movie hit Project Hail Mary is scheduled to arrive on Prime Video this week, about two weeks after it surprisingly made its streaming video on demand debut on another Amazon streaming service.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary premiered in theaters on March 20 before debuting on digital streaming via premium video on demand on May 12.

The film wrapped up its domestic theatrical run on June 25 after earning $344 million, and coupled with the $339.5 million the film made internationally, Project Hail Mary ended up with a worldwide box office tally of $683.5 million.

While most Amazon MGM Studios releases skip the PVOD route and premiere on SVOD on Prime Video 45 days after opening in theaters, the studio switched up its streaming strategy considerably for Project Hail Mary. In addition to making the film available for purchase or rent on PVOD first, Amazon MGM bucked the trend once again by making its SVOD debut on Amazon’s MGM+ platform (formerly (EPIX) on June 18.

Prime Video announced via a YouTube clip from the film on Wednesday (see below) that Project Hail Mary will be arriving on the streaming platform on Friday, July 3. Meanwhile, the film will still be available to purchase or rent on PVOD and will continue to stream on MGM+.

For viewers who don’t have Prime Video, the streaming service is one of the benefits of having an Amazon membership, which costs $14.99 per month or $139 per year.

Consumers also have an option to subscribe to Prime Video only for $8.99 per month. Since Prime Video is an ad-based subscription service, consumers can opt to upgrade to an ad-free Prime Video Ultra package for an extra $4.99 per month or $45.99 per year.

What Is ‘Project Hail Mary’ About?

Project Hail Mary is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by The Martian author Andy Weir. Ryan Gosling stars as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher recruited to go on an interstellar mission to discover the mystery behind a substance that causes the sun to die out.

While on his mission, Ryland encounters a rock-like alien being shaped like a spider — who he names Rocky (voice of James Ortiz) — whose planet is suffering the same fate as Earth. Together, Ryland and Rocky must work together to solve the mystery before it wipes out the populations of both of their home planets.

The screenplay for Project Hail Mary was adapted from Weir’s novel by Drew Goddard. Rated PG-13, Project Hail Mary also stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung and Liz Kingsman.

In addition to winning over audiences, Project Hail Mary was a big hit with Rotten Tomatoes critics, earning a Tomatometer score of 94% “fresh” based on 415 reviews. In addition, RT audiences gave the film a 95% “fresh” score on the site’s Popcornmeter based on 25,000-plus verified user ratings.
