Ryan Gosling’s Project Hail Mary is coming to digital streaming this week as the blockbuster space adventure continues to soar at the worldwide box office.
Based on The Martian author Andy Weir’s bestselling novel of the same name, Project Hail Mary opened in theaters on March 20. Gosling stars in the film as Ryland Grace, a middle school science teacher-turned-astronaut who wakes up light-years from home with no recollection of how he got aboard the spaceship he is riding on. As Ryland regains his memory, he plows ahead in the mission at hand, which is to solve the mystery behind a substance that is causing the sun to die out and will eventually put all of Earth’s inhabitants in peril.
While on his interstellar mission, Ryland encounters a spider-shaped alien made of rocks whom he calls Rocky (voice of James Ortiz). Once the two learn how to communicate, Rocky explains that his planet is also facing the same sort of situation where its sun is dying, so together they must work on a solution to save the lives of both humans and the alien’s fellow extraterrestrial beings.
Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, Project Hail Mary is adapted for the screen by Drew Goddard, and also stars Sandra Hüller, Milana Vayntrub, Ken Leung and Liz Kingsman.
Project Hail Mary will debut on digital streaming via premium video on demand on Tuesday, May 12, according to When to Stream. While When to Stream is typically accurate with its PVOD reports, the release date has not been announced or confirmed by Amazon MGM Studios and is subject to change. The announcement of the film’s May 12 digital release date, however, has also been popping up in YouTube ads, plus the confirmation of Project Hail Mary’s PVOD release shows that the film is already available to purchase or rent on Prime Video in the U.K.
Word of the release of Project Hail Mary on digital comes after Amazon MGM studios announced in mid-April that it was delaying the film’s streaming release and extending its theatrical run, which included a one-week return to IMAX theaters to give theatergoers an opportunity to see the film in the way it was originally intended.
The PVOD release of Project Hail Mary also marks a departure for Amazon MGM Studios, which generally bypasses the release of its films on digital streaming in favor of a direct release of them on streaming video on demand on Amazon’s Prime Video streaming platform first. Typically, Amazon MGM films arrive on SVOD on Prime Video about 45 days, give or take, after they premiere in theaters.
Now with its different streaming release trajectory, Project Hail Mary will be available to purchase or rent on Tuesday in the U.S. on such digital platforms as Apple TV, Fandango at Home, YouTube Movies & TV and, of course, Prime Video. Purchase and rental information is not yet available.
‘Project Hail Mary’ Is The Second-Highest Grossing Film Of 2026 To Date
As of Sunday, Project Hail Mary has earned $655.7 million at the worldwide box office, which makes it the second-highest-grossing film globally in 2026 behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which has earned $941.2 million worldwide to date.
The audience split is nearly even between Project Hail Mary’s earnings at the domestic and international box office. As of Sunday, the film has earned $327.7 million from North American theaters and $328 million internationally.
Like the worldwide box office, Project Hail Mary domestically comes in at No. 2 spot for 2026 (so far) behind The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, which has earned $412.1 million from North American theaters since its April 1 release date.
Project Hail Mary’s net production budget of $200 million before marketing expenses, according to Puck News.
Rated PG-13, Project Hail Mary is still playing in theaters and arrives on PVOD on Tuesday.
