Samsung’s next event, Galaxy Unpacked, is coming soon. The company has just released a series of teaser videos which confirm that something is coming with a wider shape to it than we’ve seen before. Here’s what it all reveals.
Every summer for years, Samsung releases its latest crop of folding phones, so there’s no doubt that the videos released across the Samsung social channels are all about the next generation of foldables.
Decoding The Campaign
The images are all regular in shape and surely represent the much-touted Galaxy Z Fold 8 Wide, (that’s the name pundits are calling it, but Samsung may have a different title), a wider version of the regular folding phone that’s expected to launch. The name could be something different.
I mean, it’s expected there’ll be a smartwatch or two as well, but I honestly don’t believe the rectangular shapes Samsung is flaunting are related to that — though I suppose I could be surprised.
The videos all transform an object like a bar of chocolate or a cookie into a wide rectangle, with coded text like “A whole new slice,” for a frankly delicious-looking, juicy piece of pepperoni pizza, for instance.
The bar of chocolate begins shaped exactly like the Galaxy Z Fold7, if it were made of chocolate, you understand, and the top three squares are snapped off with the legend, “Sweet new shape.”
The Serious Point: Samsung Beats Apple To The Punch
There’s a serious backbone to all these videos, of course. It’s the first official confirmation that a new wider model is coming to the Galaxy range. Just as importantly, since it’s thought the first Apple foldable, possibly called the iPhone Ultra, will have a similar aspect ratio, it’s Samsung’s way of getting in first.
The company’s videos can be seen, for instance, in its Instagram feed where it asks for comments if you can guess what’s coming. It’s not hard, but there are more clues.
More Clues To A Radical Foldable Redesign
Splodges of paint are scraped together to create an elegant number eight, which adds to the clarity of the reveal, with the words, “Bold stroke, new shape,” just in case you needed any more help.
Perhaps there are more clues hidden. There seems to be an emphasis on pink and light mauve colors in some videos (not the chocolate bar, obviously), so it may be that these will be among the colors for the new folding phones.
Pastel colors dominate in a jigsaw of a dog — a beagle, is it? It’s hard to tell as the dear little pup is wearing sunglasses and a scarf, which at least evokes a summery mood, telling us the reveal proper is coming soon.
When that comes, though memories of pizza, chocolate and jigsaws may be forgotten, Samsung will be launching what could be its most radical foldable yet.
