When Does Subnautica 2 Early Access Unlock?
Subnautica 2 unlocks globally on Thursday, May 14, 2026 at 8 AM PDT, with the same simultaneous unlock across every region. Here is the breakdown for multiple time zones.
- 11 AM EDT in the U.S.
- 4 PM BST in the U.K.
- 5 PM CEST in Western Europe
- Midnight JST on May 15 in Japan
The simultaneous global unlock is a nice change of pace from staggered regional rollouts. It’s also far less complicated than what we’ve seen with other early access titles — especially on PC.
If you’ve already preloaded on Steam or Xbox, the game should be playable the moment the clock hits 15:00 UTC.
Which Platforms Will Subnautica 2 Launch On?
Early access launches on PC via Steam and Epic Games Store, plus Xbox Series X|S through Game Preview, with day-one inclusion on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass.
Unknown Worlds and Xbox Wire has also confirmed support for the ROG Xbox Ally handheld and Xbox Play Anywhere, so a single purchase covers PC and Xbox.
PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2 versions have not been announced. Unknown Worlds has not commented on those platforms, though the original Subnautica eventually reached both Sony and Nintendo platforms. Because of that, there is hope that a later release isn’t off the table for more consoles, though for now, it is unconfirmed.
The same goes for VR support, which is not available at launch despite the original Subnautica’s strong VR following.
Can You Preload Subnautica 2?
Yes. The pre-purchase and preload are both live across all three confirmed storefronts. The Steam preload is roughly 12.9 GB with 14.56 GB of total disk space required, and Xbox Series X|S preload sits at around 14 GB. Epic Games Store buyers also have access to the 72-hour preload window.
Players who pre-purchase or who wish-listed before launch receive a Reaper Leviathan statue base decoration as a thank-you for hitting 5 million Steam wishlists ahead of the drop.
That’s a meaningful threshold for a survival game and especially impressive for a title that has somewhat flown under the radar. I resisted an underwater joke.
It’s also a note that shows it has withstood a complicated path to launch.
What Should Players Expect From Subnautica 2 Early Access?
This is early access, not 1.0. Unknown Worlds has been explicit that more biomes, creatures, craftables, features and narrative content will arrive in updates, with the studio framing this as a more polished and feature-rich early access launch than any of their previous games.
It’s great to see a game prepped for future growth. Expect bugs, missing features and ongoing patches as the studio iterates on community feedback.
The biggest design shift from the original is optional online co-op for up to four players total, which Unknown Worlds has called the most-requested feature for the sequel. Combined with the Game Pass day-one drop and similarly structured early-launch releases like the Invincible Vs. rollout, Subnautica 2 has a built-in following most early access titles have to wait years to earn.
