The DC superhero flop Supergirl has already fallen out of the domestic box office top 5 after two weeks in release.

Directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock in the title role, Supergirl crashed in theaters in its opening weekend disastrous $37.1 million in ticket sales from 3,602 North American theaters — about $18 million below the film’s tracking number in early June, which pegged a $55 million opening.

Produced by DC co-CEO and Superman director James Gunn, Supergirl went into a freefall in its second weekend in theaters domestically, diving 77% in business for a second frame tally of $8.6 million from 3,602 domestic venues.

Now, it appears that Warner Bros. has all but given up on Supergirl as the film has shed more than 1,000 venues heading into the film’s third weekend, and the reduction of screens is showing up in the numbers. Deadline projects that Supergirl will earn $3.8 million in its third frame from 2, a 55% drop in business from last weekend.

As such, Supergirl, which opened at No. 2 domestically and dropped to No. 4 in its second frame, will finish at No. 8 this weekend should the projection hold.

The dismal turnout for Supergirl’s third weekend is the latest blow in the calamitous run for the film, which Variety reports had a $170 million production budget with an additional marketing spend of “roughly $120 million.”

Should Deadline’s projection hold, it will bring Supergirl’s running tally to $66.2 million. Coming into the weekend, Supergirl earned $46.4 million internationally.

‘Supergirl’ Should Be On PVOD By The End Of July

Exacerbating Supergirl’s woes is a report from The Hollywood Reporter last week, which detailed creative differences during the production, low test scores and competing cuts of the film that pitted director Craig Gillespie’s version of the film against the studio’s cut of the film.

At this juncture, the next best hope for Supergirl to recoup its massive production and marketing costs will be when the film arrives for purchase and rent on premium video on demand. If the film follows Warner Bros.’ usual PVOD strategy, Supergirl should be available to watch at home by late July.

Supergirl, of course, marks the second feature film release in DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran’s new DC Universe followi the release of Superman in 2025.

Next up is Clayface — a horror film based on a Batman villain — slated for an Oct. 23 opening, while the Superman sequel Man of Tomorrow, once again starring David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, is set to premiere on July 9, 2027. Supergirl star Milly Alcock is among Man of Tomorrow’s co-stars.
