Spain’s victory over Argentina on Sunday didn’t just crown a new world champion. It delivered the most-watched soccer match ever on Spanish-language television in the United States, drawing 23.9 million viewers to Telemundo and Peacock.

While that number tells part of the story, the full picture is even bigger. Telemundo set new viewership records in Spanish-language media history at from the get-go and at every stage of the 39-day tournament.

Across 104 matches played between June 11 and July 19, the network averaged a Total Audience Delivery of 6.3 million viewers per game, a 143% jump from the 2022 Qatar tournament, and the numbers grew as the stakes did.

A Tournament Built on Momentum

The group stage laid the groundwork, but the knockout rounds delivered the audience surges that defined this tournament.

Mexico’s Round of 16 clash against England on July 5 drew 23.2 million viewers, making it the second most-watched soccer match in Spanish-language media history. On linear alone, the full program averaged 10.1 million viewers and peaked at 11.7 million at 10:45 p.m. ET, the highest-rated telecast in Spanish-language TV history.

The France vs. England third-place match pulled 7.7 million viewers, up 225% from the equivalent fixture in 2022.

In total, 42 games this tournament reached at least 6 million viewers. In 2022, only two matches hit that mark.

Streaming Changed the Game

Perhaps the most striking shift from four years ago is what happened on digital platforms. The numbers confirmed what Telemundo had already suspected. After 2022, the network identified a new kind of viewer it called the “super streamer,” a digitally mobile Hispanic consumer watching across multiple devices at once, and built its 2026 infrastructure around them, adding interactive Peacock features, vertical viewing experiences and round-the-clock FAST channel programming to meet fans wherever they were watching.

It paid off. Streaming accounted for 48% of Telemundo’s Total Audience Delivery for the tournament, up from 30% in 2022. The average minute audience on Peacock and Telemundo’s streaming platforms reached 3 million viewers per match, a 297% increase from 767,000 in Qatar.

The Spain vs. Argentina final drew an average minute audience of 13.9 million on streaming alone, a 370% increase over the most-streamed match of the 2022 tournament.

Twenty-one games averaged 4 million or more streaming viewers. In 2022, none did.

That demographic also showed stronger brand receptivity during the tournament, with World Cup viewers 21% more likely to feel loyal to advertisers and 24% more likely to view tournament ads as credible, according to NBCUniversal data.

Local and Social Reach

Telemundo’s 26 owned-and-operated stations reached 22.3 million total viewers through the semifinals, averaging 2.52 million viewers per match, up 57% from 2022.

Eight stations captured 50% or more of the World Cup audience share in their markets, including Los Angeles, New York, Miami, Houston and Phoenix.

On social media, the tournament generated 2.25 billion video views across platforms, more than nine times the combined total from the 2018 and 2022 tournaments. Total social actions reached 75.1 million, nearly three times those two tournaments combined.

The Bigger Picture

June 2026 became Telemundo’s highest-performing month in network history, averaging 1.4 million daily viewers, surpassing previous World Cup highs from June 2018 and December 2022. Sunday, July 5 set a new single-day linear record for Spanish-language television, averaging 3.6 million viewers across the full day.
