The CREATE Framework For The AI Era

Pabitra Saikia is a technology and program management leader serving as VP and Senior Change Delivery Lead at Truist Bank.

Every major technological revolution has changed what humans do. Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing who humans need to become.

For decades, technology has made consuming information progressively easier. Search engines eliminated the need to memorize facts. Smartphones put the world’s knowledge in our pockets. Streaming platforms personalized our entertainment. Now generative AI produces text, code, images, music and even business strategy in seconds.

At first glance, it looks like AI is replacing human effort. I believe the opposite is true: AI is accelerating humanity’s shift from consumers of knowledge to creators of value, and that shift carries real implications for how leaders hire, train and organize their teams.

We Live In An Age Of Cutting-Edge Obsolescence

The pace of change has become so rapid that knowledge itself now has a shrinking shelf life. Software evolves faster than organizations can train their people. Job descriptions are rewritten before university curricula can catch up.

Call it cutting-edge obsolescence: a world where staying current is no longer enough, because today’s expertise can become tomorrow’s baseline.

Previous industrial revolutions replaced physical labor. Today’s AI increasingly automates cognitive tasks. That doesn’t make human intelligence less valuable; it makes routine intelligence less differentiated. Knowing the answer is no longer a competitive advantage when AI can retrieve it instantly. Knowing which question to ask is.

The Consumer Economy Is Becoming The Creator Economy

AI is democratizing creation. Historically, most people have been consumers rather than creators or producers. AI is rewriting that equation.

A software engineer can now build applications that once required an entire team. A designer can prototype dozens of concepts in an afternoon. A researcher can synthesize thousands of papers. An entrepreneur can test a business idea in days instead of months.

But the real opportunity is in producing more original thinking. Organizations that use AI solely to generate reports faster will gain efficiency. Organizations that use it to generate new ideas, products and business models will redefine their industries. The competitive advantage is shifting from production to imagination.

Expertise Is Becoming More Valuable, Not Less

AI does not replace experts; it makes experts more powerful.

The same AI system rarely produces the same outcome with an expert and a novice. The expert frames sharper questions, spots flawed answers, challenges assumptions and brings domain knowledge the model simply doesn’t have. The novice, however, will frequently accept any answer that sounds believable. AI doesn’t replace judgment; rather, it elevates the importance of doing so.

With greater capacity among AI systems, human difference is evolving to favor capabilities that machines have yet to be able to match:

• Curiosity

• Ethical judgment

• Contextual awareness

• Systems thinking

• Creativity

• Leadership

• Trust

These are becoming strategic capabilities, the ones that determine which organizations actually capture value from AI and which merely rent its output.

The New Literacy Is Learning

For generations, education emphasized acquiring knowledge. Tomorrow’s workforce will be judged by its ability to continuously replace outdated knowledge. The most valuable professionals won’t be the ones who know the most; they’ll be the ones who learn the fastest.

That has direct implications for how leaders build teams. Learning agility is quickly becoming as important a hiring criterion as any technical credential on a resume.

Leadership Must Evolve

Leaders can no longer treat AI as simply a productivity tool.

The true responsibility of these experts should be to create organizations where technology enhances human capacity rather than limits it—that is, organizations that encourage innovation while maintaining accountability, and that value critical thinking rather than blind faith in the conclusions of AI technologies.

The future won’t belong to organizations that resist AI, or to those that automate indiscriminately. It will belong to those that combine artificial intelligence with human wisdom.

A Framework For Creating Human Advantage: CREATE

Turning this shift into practice takes more than good intentions. I propose a simple framework, CREATE, to help leadership teams pressure-test whether they’re building human advantage or just automating around the edges.

Cultivate Curiosity. In an era when information is readily available through AI, success will be achieved not by knowing the answer but by asking the right questions. Is curiosity as celebrated as the answer?

Reinforce Human Judgment. AI can recommend; humans remain responsible. Organizations should define where human judgment is mandatory—particularly for strategic, ethical, financial and customer-impacting decisions. Where must human judgment remain the final authority?

Enhance Expertise. While AI does not democratize expertise, it democratizes access to information. It enhances the value of experts, as they can identify which questions to ask and where AI goes wrong. Our objective here is augmentation, not replacement. How are we using AI for this purpose?

Accelerate Learning. Skills have shorter half-lives than ever. Organizations should hire and promote for learning agility rather than static knowledge—learning is the new literacy. Are employees becoming better learners faster than technology changes?

Transform Work Into Creation. Many organizations use AI to produce reports faster. Leading ones use it to create new products, services and business models. Efficiency is today’s benefit; innovation is tomorrow’s advantage. Are we using AI merely for efficiency or for innovation?

Embed Ethical Leadership. The more capable AI becomes, the more important trust becomes. Responsible leaders ensure transparency, accountability, explainability, fairness and psychological safety. Are AI decisions transparent, accountable and aligned with human values?

CREATE isn’t a checklist. It’s a lens for leadership conversations about where the organization is actually headed.

The Next Competitive Advantage Is Human

History consistently suggests that technology automates yesterday’s work while creating tomorrow’s opportunities.

AI is unlikely to be the final destination of human progress. It’s the catalyst for redefining what uniquely human contribution looks like.

We’re entering an era where consuming knowledge is increasingly automated, but creating insight, exercising judgment and imagining new possibilities have never been more valuable.
