The Last Airbender’ Season 3 Release Date

Netflix has released season 2 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, the live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series that has been…okay, at best, but often not lived up to fan expectations. At least fans who expected it to be close to on par with the original, which is, admittedly, a small group.

Avatar debuted at #2 on Netflix’s top 10 list, not ideal, but the show is not in danger of cancellation before a third season. That renewal already happened ages ago as the show was always meant to get through the original three seasons’ worth of source material. And it’s blazing through it, given the latest update about season 3’s release date.

Just yesterday, it was announced that production had ended on season 3 of Avatar: The Last Airbender, right as season 2 was airing. That’s the kind of thing that can only happen with hyper-early renewals and back-to-back filming, and it signifies far less waiting than normal for most Netflix series.

So, when is the release date? Based on past data, we have:

  • Production ended on Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 on March 21, 2025, way after season 1’s February 22, 2024 release date.
  • Avatar: The Last Airbender season 2 aired on June 25, 2026, so that’s 1 year and 3 months of post-production time, and a gap of 2 years and 4 months between the first two seasons.
  • But 1 year and 3 months from now, with production ended, would be late September 2027 for the season 3 premiere, close to half the wait of the gap between seasons 1 and 2.

Again, once the plan was in motion, two more seasons filmed back-to-back, and this kind of timeline became possible. We have seen a sibling series like One Piece attempting to pick up the pace as well, but it will still likely not be this quickly.

As for the reception of season 2, it is…less than ideal. It has a middling 67% Rotten Tomatoes score from critics and a lower, nearly rotten 63% audience score. Right now, my timeline is filmed with criticisms of its VFX (“it looks like the unskippable ad before a mobile game trailer,” someone said) or changes in storylines or characterization from the original. There’s also the fact that since this is a live-action adaptation, the supposedly 12-year-old Aang has grown about a foot since last season, with star Gordon Cormier growing up fast, something the animated series did not have to deal with.

I don’t think Avatar will go down as one of the better Netflix adaptations in its roster, certainly. It’s done better than say, Cowboy Bebop, but it’s nowhere close to the reception of the ultra-faithful and beautifully crafted One Piece. But season 3 is coming, and maybe it will pull things out in the end.
