While the logo was debuted a while back, indicating a different Superman shield than movies past, now we have the official David Corenswet Superman suit from James Gunn’s Superman (formerly Superman Legacy), revealed early Monday afternoon.
It’s a bit of a strange reveal, as Superman is sitting in a chair pulling on his boots as some sort of giant death orb is shooting Metropolis outside. It’s also been pointed out that the suit doesn’t really seem to be the “muscle clinging” type at this angle, as it looks a bit loose on him. Maybe just in this hunched pose, as we know Corenswet has put on more than enough muscle to fill out a suit, but it does look kind of odd. There are also a lot of lines threaded throughout the suit in a way we haven’t seen on others in the past.
But of course it’s also a look at Cornswet himself as Clark, and we can see that he has the signature Superman hair curl. I’d say he looks the closest to Reeve Superman out of any of the past ones, but its just one angle.
Gunn’s Superman Legacy already looks to be a much different take on Superman, not just in terms of his look as we can now see, it’s a film that stars not only staples like Lois and Lex, but characters like Hawkgirl, Mr. Terrific, Engineer and Metamorpho. And it’s definitely not any kind of origin story, as Gunn wanted to move well past that, which has been overdone by now.
It’s all a bit strange, but it’s just hard to doubt Gunn’s vision given what he’s done with both the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and DC’s second Suicide Squad, all great superhero features. I absolutely know comic fandom and that this suit will be dissected to death (admittedly I’ve done some of that here), but I’m more focused on the death orb outside, and wondering what exactly that’s about.
Superman is still set for a July 11, 2025 release date, just over a year from now, and it’s currently filming. It will mark the official launch of Gunn’s DCU, even though some past DCEU-era characters like Peacemaker, Amanda Waller and Blue Beetle are being carried over.
I would not expect a trailer any time soon after this, but I do wonder if we might start getting other character posters rolled out from here, which seems like the logical next step. Regardless, I’m excited to see more.
