Topline

Christopher Nolan’s “The Odyssey” blew past expectations and grossed an estimated $87 million over its second weekend in theaters, according to early numbers reported by the Hollywood trade publications—surpassing the blockbuster director’s previous career high for second weekend ticket sales.

Key Facts

The estimated $87 million from theaters in North America over the weekend surpassed projections from Boxoffice Pro that put the film in the $75 million-$85 million range, and was only a 30% decline from its opening weekend.

That’s in addition to another $215.3 million in international markets, bringing the ancient Greek epic’s global total to an estimated $639.6 million.

“The Odyssey” is now Nolan’s top film for second weekend ticket sales, surpassing “The Dark Knight” in 2008 with $75.1 million.

It’s also the second-best second weekend for an R-rated film in box office history, coming in behind only “Deadpool and Wolverine,” which grossed $96 million over its second weekend in 2024.

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

Whether it will top the $1 billion mark, and whether it will become Nolan’s biggest film everBoth “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises” grossed over $1 billion, with the sequel coming in ahead at $1.08 billion in 2012.

Surprising Fact

A big portion of the ticket sales for “The Odyssey” are coming from IMAX theaters—Nolan’s preferred viewing format. IMAX ticket sales have now accounted for $140 million in sales globally so far, Variety reported. Seats in IMAX theaters in major markets like Los Angeles and New York are sold out for weeks, with scalpers trying to charge theatergoers up to $1,000 for resale tickets.

‘Toy Story 5’ Surpasses $1 Billion Globally

“The Odyssey” dominated the box office over the weekend, but Disney scored both the second and third place slots with more family-friendly offerings. The live action “Moana” reboot came in second with an estimated $10.5 million gross, while “Toy Story 5” extended its blockbuster run in theaters for a sixth weekend with another $10 million. The Disney/Pixar animated film has now finally crossed the $1 billion threshold, making it the highest grossing film of the year so far, with a $1.02 billion global total.
